So the forum now has physicians, scientists, infectious disease specialists and now hospital Administrators. Good to know in times of a pandemic. I'm so reassured.

No, but we do have people who can interpret data and use common sense.

Sure, a hospital has a storeroom the size of an Amazon warehouse to stock 700K masks.
Why does facebook? Can a hospital not have off site storage or shipping containers to store stuff in?

Are they just supposed to say hell with it, we dont have that much room, the White House basement can hold enough masks for everyone if this happens again.

I'm sure the hospitals will from now on. Probably a lot already did but probably more did not (obviously with the shortage).
Where did FB get all these masks they have? Why did they have them when health care facilities didn't?

Silicon valley businesses stocked up on them several years ago to protect their people from the smoke of th CA wild fires. Pretty sure Apple donated one million masks, but at least they have clean rooms where things get made.

Just read an article from 2011 that sort of predicted the shortage of ventilators.

And then after a few years when that hospital needs to cut costs there goes the stockpile.

There's normally such a turn around, nothing would go past an expiration date.

I disagree Mitzi.
The reason for stockpiling for a pandemic is to stockpile an amount that may be used in a critical emergency.
Such stockpiles are not involved in a normal turn around, they are sitting somewhere on a shelf.

My other polint is that expiration dates on sealed bandages and face masks ar horse dung anyway.

When I did community relation project overseas while in the Navy, we often delivered expired US medical supplies to 3rd world nations. Better outdated than no supplies at all. I'm sure the donating agency got some sort of tax break.

There is nothing wrong with a face mask sitting in a box with the top shut that has passed an expiration date.
I have some sealed bandages here at home that must be 20 years old, I don't hesitate to use them if necessary.
More than likely they are still sterile and if not they are clean.

Sadly - there is probably some law that prohibits the use of an expired product in the medical industry.

My aunt used to run central supply in a small hospital, she use to bring home all sorts of stuff that was going to be thrown out. To this day I still use the surgical rags for soaking up blood to clean my glasses, nothing is better. They would throw out what was left of the old supply when a new one showed up. I have tons of scissors, scalpels, forceps, etc.

Those cannot be used in a hospital if they're expired. The expired products have to be dumped. Does anyone realize they have regular inspections? They can lose their accreditation if things like this are stored.

That's how it works.

Hey Jinx, I have half of a box of face masks (5) in my garage from when I was doing some sanding years ago. I was surprised when I looked the other day and they have the N95 rating. There is no expiration date but they were manufactured in 1996. I'm using them if Hogan mandates masks.:yay:

That hospitals don't seem to have enough supplies? Seems that going lean and expecting the deliveries when you need something bit people in the ass. The thing about having enough of something in an unforseen circumstance means you have to pay for storage when you don't need it.

I had an argument in a lean six sigma class one time about how important it was to have certain things when you need them but the instructor wasn't having it and kept insisting that it just cost more money to have an on hand supply of things.

In 2002 or 2003 they "leaned" our warehourse at work over a 3 day weekend without notifying any of us. Tossed out a couple of million dollars worth of prisms I had stored in an optics vault. No part numbers apparently = garbage.
