Bowie, Maryland- The Maryland State Police, Forestville Barrack conducted a sobriety checkpoint Friday evening, July 5, 2019 on northbound Maryland Route 301 (Crain Highway) near Pointers Ridge Drive in Bowie.
The checkpoint was operated under the guidelines of the “Checkpoint Strike force” initiative with the goals to remove impaired drivers from Prince George’s County roads and educate drivers of the dangers associated with drinking and driving. The checkpoint also supported the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office’s Drive Focused, Drive Sober, Drive Safe Initiative launched in April. The location for the checkpoint and following targeted enforcement were determined based on data associated with alcohol-related crashes and DUI arrests. The checkpoint location was within a couple hundred yards of the scene of a February crash that claimed the lives of six people, five of whom were children. Alcohol was determined to be a factor in that crash.
The Maryland State Police remind all citizens that if you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages, you should also plan on having a designated driver. We encourage everyone to obey all traffic laws to make our roads and highways safer for all travelers.

During the checkpoint, which lasted over ninety minutes, Maryland State Police Troopers had contact with the drivers of 575 vehicles and arrested one driver for driving while impaired. Maryland State Highway personnel as well as Maryland State Police Chemical Test for Alcohol Unit (CTAU) assisted with the checkpoint.
The Maryland State Police remind all citizens that if you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages, you should also plan on having a designated driver. We encourage everyone to obey all traffic laws to make our roads and highways safer for all travelers.
