Social Responsibility

Exodus 22:16 “If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife. 17 If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.
18 “Do not allow a sorceress to live.
19 “Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal is to be put to death.
20 “Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed.
21 “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.
22 “Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. 24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.
25 “If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest. 26 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset, 27 because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.
28 “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.
29 “Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats.
“You must give me the firstborn of your sons. 30 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.
31 “You are to be my holy people. So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts; throw it to the dogs.
Here's the link to commentary that I use, that goes with these verses.

You shall not permit a sorceress to live: This was considered a severe enough threat that sorcery was considered a capital crime. This combination of occult practices and drug-induced altered states was seen as destructive to the culture and moral fabric of ancient Israel.
Whoever lies with an animal shall surely be put to death: Bestiality was practiced in the ancient world, and here God commanded specifically against it.
You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people: The most basic measure of holiness is in what we say. God cares how we talk about Him and those in rightful authority over us.
I pulled some of the commentary I heard about while listening to WAVA on the way to and from work in Annapolis. The topics of drugs and bestiality were discussed constantly. The bestiality got snagged anytime the topic revolved around homosexuality.

The churches preach about virginity whenever they get a chance. I do wonder though, just what is/was the going price for a virgin???? If daddy refuses to allow his daughter to marry the boy, does it cost the life of all the boys in town? That's what it cost the boys in Shechem... They were murdered because one of them lay with Dinah.

Check out verse 28. It's wrong to curse the President or the former President, or any other ruler [leader] of our people. I don't think I ever heard that sermon from any preacher. While I have been guilty of that up until this minute, I won't do it anymore. After all, they stood up to do a job and several have been shot at for doing so. They don't need the people, they stood up for, cursing them. Instead, I think, if I have something gnawing at me... I'll just say "Exodus 22:28" and stop. That will be how I vent my opinion.

Check out the second part of verse 29. We are to give our firstborn son to God. No that doesn't mean we should pull an Abraham/Isaac and take our firstborn sons out in the woods and sacrifice them to God. It means we should have them circumcised [(at) the age of 8 days] and we should teach them about God. We're lucky to have children. Remember, God took Pharaoh's oldest son because Pharaoh acted like he was god. God wants all children to understand that He is God... the ONLY God. If we teach them otherwise, well they might grow up to think their poop doesn't stink and their sons won't know who God is.

My Online Bible titled this section "Social Responsibility". So, will I.

Please pray for the family of Lou Dobs. I'm sure they will miss him.
