software for 13y/o

Can anyone here recommend a software program for a 13y/o who wants to learn to create animation? He'd be a beginner at this, so either user-friendly, or with instructions for beginners is best.
I'm not sure if such a thing exists, but he's hoping to "draw" people/scenes and make them 3-D and moveable? Does that make sense? I hardly know what I'm talking about.
I don't know a thing about computers, so I can't tell you what I've got for a computer, but I think it can handle a decent size program.

GMAX is Free .... but kinda advanced ... but hey he might take right to it

it is for 3d modeling ..... guys use it for making objects like space ships, tanks buildings for adding to MOD ifyed 3d games ...
