Avery good friend of ours is a pc brainiac. He works on base. He always stood by Mcafee. Last time he was here he recommended AVAST.

Nothing is going to be foolproof.

Get yourself whatever anti-virus software you like. Some are a little better than others.

Some free - really good programs to use with your AV software:

Spybot
Adaware

I've used these for a few years now and they do a good job of cleaning out your system.

Always scan your computer...

I think the majority here will recommend AVG products, Adaware and Spybot. I've tried Comodo firewall, and it works well, just don't like the constant pop-ups and reminders and questions.

BUT, for any of this to work, you have to take a pro-active approach. Make sure you have Windows firewall turned on (not great by itself, but it's better than leaving it turned off). Make SURE that you have Windows automatic updates turned on and have the latest and greatest patches. The best virus protection is meaningless if you don't have the system patched. Make SURE that the anti-virus, whatever you choose, is being updated DAILY. Try to avoid the use of Google and Yahoo toolbars and other "features" and "tweaks" as they can actually interfere with protection software.

If you have already been hit, there is a good chance you will never get rid of it. Wipe the machine and install a fresh copy, add the protection software immediately.

I went and got Webroot and that still didn't find the trojan. It took 2 days for AVG and Norton to find it, so eventually they caught it and quarantined. Haven't had a trojan pop up since.

I'll take a look at firefox later thanks.

I woke up this morning to find an error "Unable to transfer log files"

So the scans yesterday cleaned out SOMETHING but not all of it. :ohwell:

I'm due for a new PC but I **NEED** alot of the data on this one. I do NOT want to infect the new pc though...

You can scan your personal data for virus/spyware, then transfer it to an external drive, then onto the new PC without much chance of infection.

Firefox is a piece of shiat, imo.

I aint ever got a virus from ie. Be smart, use your head and don't run ActiveX on everypage that asks it to run and you'll be fine with ie.
