Storage makes renewables workable in some instances. But in a lot of places, they cannot provide the "density" needed.

let's set up a solar demonstration program in the high desert. Wow, it works - as long as you have sun for the vast majority of the time and a relatively small population.
Not to mention plenty of open space, i.e. desert, to put up panels.
Take that to Washington State (Seattle area) and Oregon.
