A few weeks ago, I looked on the SOMD.com classifieds for firewood. You know the old addage "if it's too good to be true, it usually is"...is a very true statement!
There was an add that included catch phrases, like "GET YOUR FIREWOOD BEFORE IT GETS TOO COLD!" and "SEASONED HARDWOOD CUT AND SPLIT FIREWOOD", with prices listed as follows, "IF YOU WANT IT DELIVERED, THE PRICE IS $110.00 { APPROX. A CORD}"...
This was music to the ears of a guy who procrastinates with almost everything. It was November, I had "zero" gallons of fuel in the tank and very little firewood on the stand.
So, when the two young guys dropped off the "approx" cord of wood in their 1970's model chevy pickup, I new I was getting raped! The wood is good (red oak) firewood, but it looks and burns like it was cut yesterday, so it is useless to me now. As soon as I picked up a piece, I knew it was green, due to the weight and feel of it. To be honest, I was afraid to refuse it because, now, the two young chaps knew where I lived and I didn't want any repercussions. Oh, and by the way, you cannot get a cord of wood into 8' truck bed, unless you have 5' side walls...so, I actually paid $110 for about a half a cord of wood that I won't be able to use until next year.
I'm pretty certain, the proprietors listed in the DNR database will be trustworthy. Average price for a cord of firewood (including delivery) is about $160.
Buyer beware, for anyone advertising firewood who's not listed in the database!
