Some Democrats Are Sensing Missed Opportunities

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 — Democrats are heading into this year's elections in a position weaker than they had hoped for, party leaders say, stirring concern that they are letting pass an opportunity to exploit what they see as widespread Republican vulnerabilities.

My favorite line...

"We're selling our party short; you've got to stand for a lot more than just blasting the other side," said Gov. Phil Bredesen of Tennessee. "The country is wide open to hear some alternatives, but I don't think it's wide open to all these criticisms. I am sitting here and getting all my e-mail about the things we are supposed to say about the president's speech, but it's extremely light on ideas. It's like, 'We're for jobs and we're for America.' "

The Republicans have been telling you that for years.

It actually kind of reminds me of the movie "My Cousin Vinnie", where the prosecuting attorney gets up in front of the jury for the opening statements, and explains his case in detail to the Jury.


Then the defense attorney gets up in front of the Jury and his opening statement is: "Everything that guy just said is bullshit".



Simple contradiction has never gotten a single solitary person elected EVER, and "Anybody But Bush" is not good enough to be a platform.

They tried to make the wiretapping the big issue, then found out that not only do most Americans support it but that Americans also disapprove of Democrats calling for it to end. So now the Dems have opened mouth and inserted foot, and can't find a way out of the morass. They've been yelling for hearings, and the hearings will show that everything has been on the up and up, and the back-up plan is to call for new legislation to make what's already legal "more legal" and Cheney deftly skewered them by saying Congress can suggest whatever they want, but we don't feel it's necessary.

As for the Jack Abramhoff scandal, they're stuck there because if they push too hard they're going to get just as much dirt on themselves. Harry Reid is already up to his eyeballs and I'm sure they're wondering who else might fall out in the wash.

As for jobs, unemployment is down about as low as it can go... 3.7% here in Florida even when 4% is generally accepted as the lowest you can go before you run into the people who just don't want to work. I think all of the past talk about jobs going overseas just doesn't have an impact anymore, especially since many of those jobs are coming back.

The last issue they have is to whine about Iraq, but they've gone to that well a few too many times.

I think the Dems do have an issue to exploit on energy costs, but their problem is their solutions - scrap SUVs/trucks and replace with smaller cars, drive less, alternative energy, etc., just don't resonate as most people don't want Yugos, pricey hybrids, to drive less, or to wait twenty years for affordable alternative fuel cars. They want lower gas prices NOW, and the only way we can do that is to boost domestic production NOW and the Dems want no part of that.
