Mark 14:27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
I'm gonna love you forever, forever and ever amen... as long as old men sit around and talk about old women.... as long as old women sit around and talk about old men. I was thinking about Alena Bobbitt this morning. I was thinking about how difficult it must have been to cut off a flaccid thingy. I was wondering just how you would grab it and how you would have to hold the knife to "surprise" the guy [no guy would willingly participate with a Bobbit move']. No, I'm not angry with anyone, that thought just came to mind this morning while I was making my bed, getting ready for this posting. I could not fathom grabbing my husband, son, brother, father, or neighbor and slicing.
Peter couldn't fathom disowning his leader. Simon Peter was called to join. He was one of the first. He had seen Jesus actually glow. He had seen Jesus heal people who no one else would considering trying to heal. Simon Peter knew Jesus could draw huge crowds. Every time the man showed up anywhere, people were there. Simon Peter knew Jesus was a king!
The others heard Jesus talking about being put to death. Generally suicidal people talk about it first in one way or another. I knew a man who talked about killing himself.... I figured, after a year or two, if he was serious, he would have done it already. I was shocked when he did it. Jesus kept telling people the Romans were going to put Him on a cross. Jesus never did anything to anyone!
I would bet based on Mark's telling of the Gospel, they just thought He had an obsession with the cross! He was sure He was going to the cross. I would bet based on Mark's telling of the Gospel; they were just being nice. They were just saying "we know... we know... we know". But some things are meant to be.
Verse 27, however, says the cross was always in His future. The quote in verse 27 is from Zechariah 13. Jesus has to go to the Cross and because Jesus was such a good man.... everyone was shocked! Everyone will think "If they could do that to Jesus".... ! Some things are meant to be.
Simon Peter and the rest of the disciples, reportedly stuck by Jesus. They had no reason to leave Him. Sure, that nard was expensive, but hey, Jesus didn't indulge much.
Remember, this Gospel was written by Mark. Mark was known as John Mark, and he appears in the Book of Acts. He's writing about the Mission. He wasn't an Apostle or one of the original 12 chosen. Mark will cause a problem in the Book of Acts. He's just a human follower writing what he heard.
No one, except Jesus, knew what was coming. They all had the job down pat. Jesus was just obsessed with the cross. Jesus was just obsessed with the fact His Mission was to die and rise. Jesus already knew how it would all end. His dad is God. His dad can read the future as well as Jesus could read minds. Jesus knew.
Some things are meant to be.
