I'm trying to open a windows media file but when I try I get this pop up after buffering...

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred. The server might not be available (for example, the server is busy or not online) or you might not be connected the network.
I can either click 'OK' or 'More information'.

Upon clicking more information I get this...

C00D11C0: Cannot play the file

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network problem occurred. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
  • Your computer is not connected to the local area network (LAN) or Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.
  • The path to the file is not valid. If you typed a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) address in the Open URL dialog box, verify that the file name is spelled correctly and that the path to the file is correct, and then try again. If you clicked a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.
  • The server is not available (for example, the server is busy or not online). Try again later.
  • Some network protocols in the Player are not enabled. Enable all network protocols, and then try again.
  • The proxy server settings for the Player are not configured properly. Verify that your proxy settings are correct, and then try again.
To enable all network protocols

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
  2. In the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes.
To verify your proxy server settings

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
  2. Verify your settings in the Streaming proxy settings area.

Notes
  • <LI class=indent>If you do not know what your proxy server settings should be, on the Network tab, select a protocol, click Configure, and then select Autodetect proxy settings or Use proxy settings of the Web browser (available for HTTP protocol only).
  • If you are connected to the Internet through a dial-up connection, you might not be able to choose the proxy server. For more information, consult with your Internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator.
Error ID = 0xC00D11C0, Condition ID = 0x00000000
I tried what's in red and still no dice.

Near the bottom there is a like for web help, I click it and this is what comes up...

SNIP
Any ideas?

Are you using the latest version? Are you using version 10? I did a search on your error and a bunch of people get it without any way around it. However, a number of users said it went away when they upgraded to version 10.

I believe it is version 10 but I will double check and download 10 if it's not.

In light of this problem I downloaded Winamp. The video plays, however, say the video is supposed to play for 5 minutes, it will only play 40 seconds worth. In another case the video was supposed to be 15 seconds but only 2 seconds play. Any ideas on this one?

I'm not using WinAmp but it sounds like your connection needs to reset the video download. Unfortunately, some sites are so darn busy that the download gets bog'd down (not to mention the speed of your connection could cause the same problem). You might want to hit PLAY again or try another site. If you still have the problem (assuming it isn't your computer or WinAmp) I would tend to think it might be your connection speed. Are you dialup, Cable or DSL?

Did you manage to save it?
Nope, I just opened it. Would that make any difference? I mean if it's playing it should play the whole thing and not just a small fraction of it, right?
