I have been going to Myrtle Beach for over 15 years, and always stop here! Sure it is tacky, and maybe a tourist trap, but bathrooms have always been clean (to me!) and drinks cold. Sure the sell all of the stuff made in China and Mexico, but you do not have to buy! I just laugh each and every time I go thru there!!

they took all the Pedro signs down didn't they? We don't come too far down 95 when we go to MB.

You cut over at Lumbarton and go through downtown Chadsford.?

On our return trip we do. When we come down, we'll stop in a small town in NC and spend 2 nights and explore that area. 95 as far south as Wilson then we make a left and head towards 17. The 95 to 40 (to Wilmington and its bypass) then 17 into MB maybe real good for a speed run to the beach. 70 mph on both and NC and SC use their transportation fund monies for, wait for it, ROAD CONSTRUCTION which benefits Rt 17 greatly by adding more dual lane sections to it.

Are you complaining about a Mexican themed place selling stuff made in Mexico? What am I missing?

My first road trip to Florida was in 1981. If I recall correctly SOB had a bill board every mile once I hit the North Carolina border. They were like a countdown until you got to South Carolina. Over the years I've seen less and less of them. There were a few classic ones. I see they moved the 1 with the moving sheep and now it sits on the actual SOB site.

Back before I 95 was constructed, SOB's owner was able to get them to route the highway right past his establishment. At 1 time he had 750 employees, not sure how many they have today. But I'm sure he had some clout in the local area.

I admit I stop there but don't usually buy anything except maybe gas. I did get a nice back scratcher on my latest trip. When the kids were smaller I'd get some fireworks there.

I am so very blessed
I've heard that the original owner of SOB actually owned the land where the billboards were placed. As operating/maintenance expenses grew for SOB, he would sell off more and more of the billboard locations, which is why you don't see as many billboards now as you did years ago.

Also, this may also be a untrue tale, but I've heard this, too: he was originally an unwelcome business owner in those parts of SC, mostly from the folks in NC; they felt that he was "stealing" customers from their own businesses.

The SOB owner made his point of being a savvy business owner by paying his staff with only $2 bills. When those $2 bills started showing up in huge numbers in the community, the other business owners realized how much revenue was being generated by SOB, and how much influx of money was being introducted into the area, that they then gladly welcomed him and SOB.
