Jr. Program engages young people in raising livestock for quality meat production
The Southern Maryland Meats Program (SMM) is proud to announce the opening of the application process for the 2020 SMM Junior Livestock Program. The SMM Junior Program was developed to engage young people in raising livestock for quality meat production and to raise awareness for the Southern Maryland Meats brand and SMM producer farms.
The SMM Junior Livestock Program is open to any youth (age 8 to 21 years) who is a resident in the five Southern Maryland Counties (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s, and St. Mary’s) involved in livestock production. Eligible livestock include beef, sheep, hogs, goats, poultry and rabbits. All Southern Maryland youth, including 4-H members and Future Farmers of America (FFA), are encouraged to apply.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, food production, distribution, and the food supply has been strained. It is not a typical year and the traditional shows, including the SMILE show (sponsored by SMADC), as well as the county and state fairs may be affected. “Even if those shows are not held this year, SMM’s support of our Junior Members is as strong as ever,” commented Craig Sewell SMM Livestock and Marketing Manager, “We want to support you during tough times and the good ones. So, if you are raising livestock this year, we invite you to join the program.”
Youth participating in the Program will be raising high quality meat animals adhering to SMM standards for feed, humane treatment and responsible raising practices. Junior SMM Members will be enthusiastically supported for their efforts. Participants will receive free promotional materials (stall cards if the shows are held, and t-shirts even if they are not), and a Completion Award ($100 per participant as funding allows) will be presented to all juniors who successfully complete the SMM Junior Membership Program Requirements.
In addition, each Junior Participant will be required to submit an essay on one of the three topics listed below to be eligible for the Completion Award:
- The COVID-19 Virus has severely disrupted our communities and our interactions. How did the pandemic effect your family and your farm? Did it change the way you raise your livestock?
- Have you considered farming and raising livestock something you would like to do as a career? What do you think the challenges and successes would be?
- Consumers love to buy local foods, however there are also many other choices available to them at the supermarket. How do we convince them to buy local foods all the time?
