the nerve of some people

Thank you. I thought I had it right. Yes, it was in the late 70's that this happened. I don't think I ever met him face-to-face and am glad I didn't.

funny back then in 2006...Rockin Ray was doing bigger and better things in bigger and better cities than little ole St. Mary's. Some people should get their facts straight, before posting crap. Jazzy Lady... it was only a scandal because of his race...Rockin Ray, "rocked" this little country hick town...back then.

and if you had of seen him face to face, you wouldn't have known him..

He didn't actually go to jail...it was just publicized as such, because he had young children and they feared for OUR safety...#getyourlife :smack:

Most people probably don't know this, but the “network” shows like the Top 40 Countdown and Dr. Demento were not via satellite or phone line – they were delivered each week on vinyl records and later on CDs. The local DJ played the record and stopped it to put in local commercials and when the record needed to be flipped.
I just discovered this tread in my "new posts" - somehow missed it when it was active in 2006/2007!

I still have a Top 40 countdown album set that was played on the radio by my dad when he worked for WPTX. I'll have to go find it and see what the date is. I believe it's the late 70's/early 80's.

Talk about nerve...

Only a scandal because of his race? OMFG. It was a VIOLENT FELONY CRIME he committed, ran from it, was finally found, prosecuted and CONVICTED of it. THAT was the scandal as "this little country hick town" wasn't used to such criminal activities.

I'm glad Mr. Norton went onto "bigger and better things" as BANK ROBBERY sure wasn't it.

and if you had of seen him face to face, you wouldn't have known him..
After his mug was plastered in all the local papers and even hit the DC news, I'll bet I would have.

I don't believe you for a second. And go :smack: yourself for believing such a tall tale which I assume was from your father, Rockin' Ray. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced for a VIOLENT FELONY CRIME then incarcerated. I dare you to prove any of that wrong.

I did do a quick search to see if any mention of the bank robbery was online and found this:

Dodds threw out other names of those who covered the races: Butch Morgan, Pat Thompson, Doug Pettit along with broadcasters “Wild Bill” Roth, “Rockin’” Ray Norton and Harry Davis, who called boat races locally. Some locals may remember Rockin’ Ray, who broadcast on WMDM-FM during the afternoon drive. Norton had an off-air stutter but lost his inhibition when he got behind the microphone. He went to prison for driving the getaway car for a bank robbery in the Lexington Park in the 1970s.
SoMdNews.com: Calvert Marine Museum seeks input from those who remember boat races

Maybe you ought to go after THEM for perpetuating such lies against such an angelic and wrongly persecuted man. :bigwhoop:

WOW! Thank you for posting this link! My dad is mentioned in that story. :*) Since he worked at WPTX in the 70's, he also announced the boat races. He loved doing that sort of thing. When we lived in Italy, he announced sports games that the military commands participated in. Lots of memories of my dad doing those events.

I had no idea Calvert Marine Museum was doing this - I guess it's time for a visit to the museum - I'd love to see this exhibit.

:killingme I totally missed this thread. I actually worked for WMDM in 1997-1999ish off and on. I worked with TC and Chris (I believe he used Fleetwood as his last name). I did a few little spots on the air, some voiceover work, and ran the Sunday races on the AM side. God, I can remember popping in the 8-track call letters every hour on the hour. Good times. :buddies:

They were awesome!!!!

Now I know why I don't remember any of these people...I never listened (and still don't) to the local radio.
The first few years I was living down here, and commuting to Annapolis...had lots of time to listen to them, and TC and the others were awesome!!! I called in a bunch of times. I loved the way they'd have the advertisers call in....really got to know them, and those were the ones I used.
