Worth the read. The Not Soy Nice Truth About Nature's Billion-Dollar Bean by Cynthia McMurray Write Words

For years now, we have been sold on the health benefits of soybeans. We are vigorously told that eating tofu and veggie burgers is not only a viable alternative to meat but also a healthy addition to any diet, essentially reducing our risk of heart disease and osteoporosis and easing symptoms of menopause. Soymilk is pushed to those who are lactose intolerant and even more disturbing, as a healthy baby formula for mothers who are unable to breastfeed or who wish to avoid feeding their child cow's milk.

But the fact is, soy actually contains an array of potent natural toxins.
...
Today, we know soy, among other things, is directly linked to infertility, breast cancer, infantile leukemia, Type1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer, as well as premature development in girls and delayed or even lack of normal gender development in boys. While soybeans have been eaten for thousands of years, modern manufacturing processes unfortunately make no effort to remove the potent toxins including phytic acid, trypsin inhibitors, toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines.
And while the health repercussions of eating unfermented soy can be devastating to adults, we are only beginning to see the long-term, often irreversible effects soy is having on children who were fed soy-based formulas as infants. Soy is full of phytoestrogens, naturally occurring chemicals that mimic the hormone estrogen. We now know these phytoestrogens, such as the isoflavone Genistein, which are present in extremely high amounts in soybeans, ultimately wreak havoc on endocrine function. One alarming study reported in the New Zealand Medical Journal in 1995, revealed infants who are exclusively fed soy-based formulas have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed a milk-based formula. Unbelievably, this is the estrogenic equivalent of an adult female taking at least five birth control pills per day!
This can be especially disturbing when you consider male babies normally undergo a "testosterone surge" during the first few months of life, their testosterone levels often reaching as high as those of an adult male. During this time, baby boys are being programmed to express male characteristics that typically emerge after puberty, such as the development of their sexual organs and other masculine physical traits as well as the overall brain patterns normally associated with male behavior.

Infants who are fed soy-based formulas may further experience more thyroid dysfunction than those who are breastfed or given milk formulas.

As stated earlier, the effects of soy on adults can also be devastating according to many new studies. Dr. L. White, head of the Honolulu Aging Study in Hawaii said, "(Soy foods) are not nutrients. They are drugs." Dr. White and his colleagues found "a dose-dependent positive correlation between tofu consumption and brain atrophy in a large sample of men over several decades". Essentially, they concluded the more tofu you eat during midlife, the higher degree of cognitive impairment and brain deterioration you will experience later in life.
To date, hundreds of studies link soy to an increasing number of diseases. For instance, soy is known to reduce the body's ability to assimilate calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc, which can lead to malnutrition and stunted growth in children. As well, soy consumption is shown to further increase the body's requirement for B12 and Vitamin D. Chemicals in soy also interfere with protein digestion and can lead to pancreatic disorders. Soy foods further contain high levels of aluminum, a known toxin to the nervous system and kidneys. And while the phytoestrogens in soy cause maturation problems in children, in adult women, they are shown to cause infertility and can trigger breast cancer.
