Special Needs transportation

I wasn't sure where to put this thread, but this seems to be about as good as any.

How does transportation work for people with special needs? I know there's a person on my street who clearly has one of those buses pick her up at her home in the morning. I'm guessing they also take her home at the end of her work day.

Is this a service free of charge? Is it reliable? Who here knows someone who uses it regularly?

I ask because - in all likelihood - one day my son may have to depend on it. He is very young now, but it is highly unlikely he will ever be able to drive,
and I am confident I can teach him to work and take care of himself one day. I'm much older than he is, and I will probably be gone for most of his life.

My non-communicative autistic niece used to ride it back and forth to the CLE. Free as far as I know, was always reliable. She hasnt used it for years, but when she did it was spot on.

Thing1 took public transportation when he was working at a location in the southern end of Calvert Co. He became well known on his route to the bus drivers and they were most kind to him and looked out for him. One lady even gave him Christmas presents, and such. Public transportation is free to individuals with disabilities, if you apply to the department of transportion, so it never cost him anything.

He also received/receives transportation from The Arc Southern Maryland to and from work or other activities, but that their transportation is for those individuals that are receving their DDA funded services from them.
