I know someone who can only communicate in American sign language. Since ASL signers some times have to spell words like Chattanooga for example, I asked my friend how he can read the letters so fast. He communicated back to me that he only really needed to catch the first few and the last few letters to understand what the signer was trying to convey.

So I guess they do it sign reading and we do it letter reading.
