Split court rules against Bush on greenhouse gases

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court ordered the federal government on Monday to take a fresh look at regulating carbon dioxide emissions from cars, a rebuke to Bush administration policy on global warming.

In a 5-4 decision, the court said the Clean Air Act gives the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to regulate the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from cars.

Greenhouse gases are air pollutants under the landmark environmental law, Justice John Paul Stevens said in his majority opinion.

The court's four conservative justices -- Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas -- dissented.

I don't see how ruling that the EPA has the authority to regulate greehouse gasses translates into "The Supreme Court ordered the federal government on Monday to take a fresh look at regulating carbon dioxide emissions from cars, a rebuke to Bush administration policy on global warming."

What exactly *is* the Bush Administration's policy on global warming, anyway?

To do nothing and hope it goes away.

That's the problem. In 6 yrs they've done nothing, zip, nada. And the EPA has given no reason for their inaction. Twelve states and 13 interest groups, including national Evangelicals, have sued the federal government in order to force the EPA to get off their @ass and do something.

There were 3 questions before the court.

1. Do states have the right to sue the EPA to challenge its decisions?

2. Does the Clean Air Act give the EPA the authority to regulate tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases?

3. Does EPA have the discretion not to regulate those emissions?

The Bush administration argued that the EPA does not have the authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions, which is hilarious when you consider that it's about the only thing known to man that they don't think they have the right to do.

The court ruled yes on the first 2 questions and on the 3rd ruled that the EPA must reconsider and at least give a reason for doing nothing. The first question was a biggie because all 12 states can now move forward with their lawsuits AND their own emissions legislation.

The big loser here is the car manufacturers. Just another example of the Bush administration in bed with large corporations.

They've done nothing about alien invasions, either. I've contacted NASA at least a dozen times about the little green men who are planning an attack on our planet. And do you think those evil bastards will even send up rockets to investigate?

No! This is just pure laziness and Bush should be impeached for putting our planet at such a risk.

They want to put it on the back burner! :killingme :killingme :killingme

Would that be the back burner of the charcoal stove or the back burner of the propane stove? The worst offender for putting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (after breathing animals) is burning wood. Maybe it's the millions of campfires he's putting it on.

It's evolved over the years...

1)Global warming doesn't exist...
2)Global warming exists, but we didn't do it.
3)Global warming exists, it's our fault, but there isn't anything we can do to stop it because we like our hummers.

We're currently on #2, We'll soon be on stage 3.

Then let them stand before the supreme court and say that global warming doesn't exist anymore than aliens from outer space do. That's a better argument than they came up with.

They don't want to say that because they know how stupid they would look. But if they say anything that would indicate that it does exist they would let down their loyal Bushies. So they end up with something resembling the Chewbacca defense.

What argument DID they come up with? That's a serious question - I haven't really heard anything from Bush on the topic of global warming.

I assumed the lack of response was because, what's the guy going to say? It's like some reporter asking him, "Sir, what do you intend to do about the alien invasion that's being planned right now from outer space?" The correct answer is, "Nothing," but if Bush says that, then all the little lefties will run around :jameo: shrieking that we are in imminent danger and Bush is doing NOTHING to protect us.

It should embarrass the global warming crowd to believe the hysterical rhetoric of a guy who (demonstrably) doesn't even believe it himself.

Hi Kathie - that's a point worth exploring.

WHERE go the "profits"? Since gas is taxed at such a ridiculous rate, on both the state and federal level, where exactly do the "profits" go?

Our "leaders" in Maryland are ranting about high gas prices, but guess what they've got in the works? That's right - a higher gas tax. Which will make the price of gas go.....down? Nope - gas prices will obviously go UP.

So when we're paying higher prices at the pump, let's remember that it wasn't George Bush who raised the cost.
