Squatter's Rights legislation

Is there someone who can come up with - even if you utterly and totally disagree with it - a rationale for why anyone would be given rights for occupying your property illegally?

For example - you own a property seemingly abandoned for a dozen years, overgrown and in need of repair - squatters IMPROVE the property - then - maybe they have some right to it? I'm spitballin' here. Why on earth give rights to someone who has otherwise STOLEN YOUR PROPERTY? Would they allow this for say, carjackers? Art thieves? Any other kind of theft (not counting the mob attacks and the refusal in some locations to prosecute shoplifting).

Based on the established criteria, every crackhead holed up in an abandoned house, warehouse or other building should have a claim on it now.

That's a good point. Democrats will allow squatters to take over properties that actually belong to someone, yet clear bums out of buildings that have been legit abandoned.

Well, if you own property, you are obviously rich. So screw you, man......

That's it, that's the rationale.

There is precedence here. Don't recall what the legal term is, but if two properties are adjacent, and the neighbor maintains some portion of your property for a number of years and you don't contest it, it can legally become their property.

Here it is... adverse possession.

How about if you have a car parked with a mechanical problem for a period of time at the same location. Can someone come along fix it up and claim the car too? With the same reasoning, it sounds like they wouild probably say that's fine too.

Yes they can, after a certain amount of time you can get a abandoned vehicle title. Take the VIN to the to the DMV, attempt to track the last owner, apply for the new title, pay the tax and transfer fees and viola it's yours.

The laws allowing someone to ' take over ' someone else;s abandon property were written in a time when most people were farming, this would allow a farmer to take over his neighbors abandon farm and work the land, and if enough time went by the farmer could claim ownership ....
