The St. Mary’s County Government continues to assist residents with the removal of storm-related waste debris from Hurricane Isabel and provides the following update on the debris removal recovery program that was released on September 23, 2003:

• The Special Roll-Off Container collection for household damaged materials in the nine (9) identified areas (Golden Beach, Mechanicsville/Horse Landing, Old Breton Beach Road, St. George’s Island, Piney Point, Scotland Beach, Rodo Beach, Lighthouse Road and Cornfield Harbor Road) will be completed on Monday, October 20, 2003. This decision was based on the amount of materials collected and input from the communities. It is estimated that 550 tons of damaged household debris will be collected through this assistance effort.

• The Temporary Yard Waste Collection Sites located in the areas of Charlotte Hall, Valley Lee and Dameron will be closed in accordance with the original Burning Permits obtained by the County, which expire on Monday, October 20, 2003. It is estimated that up to 37,000 cubic yards will be collected and burned at the four (4) yard waste collection locations, established for use by the community.

• The St. Andrews Landfill will continue to be open normal hours of operation for the collection of storm related yard waste debris at no charge through November 15, 2003. All other acceptable materials will require the normal landfill tipping fees of $5.00 per 1/4 ton pickup load and $35 per ton for oversized loads. St Andrews Landfill normal business hours are Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• The six (6) Convenience Centers remain open normal operating hours; Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

• Curbside deposition by residents should be discontinued, effective Monday, October 20, 2003. Any remaining debris deposited prior to this date will be collected, and we request that no new material be deposited along the roadside.

• In areas where additional clean-up or special collection assistance is needed, Community Clean-up Programs may be available on a case-by-case basis by contacting the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at 301-475-4911, Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

• For small quantities of yard waste debris, residents may wish to contact the Department of Environmental Health at 301-475-4321 to find out how to apply for an on-site Burning Permit. Please be advised that there are some important safety-related conditions such as proximity to woodlands and adjacent occupied buildings that must be recognized.

For additional information, please call the Department of Public Works and Transportation at 301- 863-8400.
