The St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office encourage residents to enjoy a safe Halloween, Friday, October 31, 2003. The Sheriff’s Office, Special Operations Division, will be supplementing the Patrol Division on Halloween and patrolling neighborhoods throughout the County in an attempt to reduce unsafe situations and criminal activity. The following are several tips for trick-or-treaters to help ensure the safety of our children and our community:

• Plan your route in advance with your parents
• Trick-or treat in groups
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear light colored or reflective-type clothing
• Stay out of roadways
• Stay in well lit areas
• Have grown-ups inspect all treats

In addition, the Sheriff’s Office will be x-raying candy free of charge, at the Circuit Courthouse in Leonardtown, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
