St. Mary's College Bomb Scare?

Railroad

A fellow I know with a scanner told me this morning that apparently there's a suspected explosive device at the college. My scanner would work if I weren't in a gully, but it doesn't do very well. Anybody out there know anything about it?

Don't know all details Railroad, I just listened to the incident for a couple of hours on scanner. I did not have it on when it started so really don't know all details It was very hectic and busy for all that were involved. Bomb techs from Salisburry (dorchester) were dispatched and all was taken care of.
There should be something released soon. It was riviting I will tell you. Just so I could still listen to it, I washed all wood work and walls in two rooms! I really wanted to post this in the "did you hear an explosive noise this afternoon" thread to let people know if they hear a bang its not the planes! I hate to make light of this, it was a serious scare.

Well if you can believe it, here it is (Excerpt from St. Mary's Today article) :lmao: :killingme

ST. MARY’S CITY (April 16, 2005) --- Normally a college prank might result in an official action of a week’s suspension or maybe hard time at the library but today’s incident at the picturesque Harvard on the St. Mary’s turned out to be a debacle of the highest degree, perhaps funny except to the taxpayers.

The "pipe bombs" were simply found to be vibratory devices, not exactly standard issue to be found in college dorms except for those who perhaps aren’t dating as much as others.

I hope that really was the case and if it was OMG! I personally don't feel it was a waste of taxpayers money, I got to listen to all the coordination and cooperation from different agencies. Plus I look at it as practice for if something real serious happens, those that respond always have drills but in the back of their minds they know it is just a drill. Today they did not, they had to evacuate dorms and put up with people trying to go to the world carnival and today was also open house day for parents. It was a logistic nightmare! Students that would not listen and leave, cars that insisted on trying to go through and private residences being told to leave their homes also. I felt sorry for those that got called back on duty after putting in a long Tiki night. Just my opinion.

I was there today visiting. What they said they found was a couple of unusual lamps with wires sticking out.

Ruined World Carnival and didn't look too good for all the parents taking their kids to the open house.

Another severe over-reaction.

And Tenknots, you're an arsehole. I'll be sharing some red ju-ju w/ you shortly.
Allow me to keep it warm for you.

Why is this an overreaction? What are they supposed to do - just let everyone mill about while they figure out if there's danger or not?

Barbra, I can only hope the rest of the SO responds to concerns in a more professional manner than name calling and sharing "red ju-ju", whatever that is.

Overreacting definition - To react with unnecessary or inappropriate force.

SMCM is a campus where a loud argument is considered a serious incident. Not likely the place for a terrorist.

I just call 'em like I see 'em. I get to do that because like everybody else, I paid for the unnecessary response.

Like it or not, from the comments I heard at SMCM yesterday (parents, staff and students), the SO looked silly.

They'd have looked a lot sillier if it was a bomb and they just let people stand around and get hurt.

Time for my speech:

Public safety is no laughing matter. It's not silly, and it's not overreacting. Unfortunately, those in charge of our public safety are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If they start clearing people out because of a threat, only to find that it was a false alarm, they're accused of "overreacting" and Bertha and her spawn are annoyed because their funnel cake eating was interrupted. But if they don't clear the premesis and people get injured or killed, now they're REALLY in trouble.

How many people were killed at the Murrah Building? How many were hurt at the Atlanta Olympics? Yet we still have an element of our society that thinks "It can't happen to me" and that officials are "overreacting" when they act on a bomb threat.

You should be thrilled that you live in an area where the Sheriff's Department takes safety threats seriously, not complaining because they were trying to prevent you from getting injured.

Tenknots,

For the safety of everyone, law enforcement must take every threat seriously. The aftermath may seem a bit overzealous, but the outcome could have been serious, then everyone would be complaining law enforcement didn’t do his or her job.

Like vrai said, "Public safety is no laughing matter," and personally, I hate Monday morning quarterbacks. Nobody knows what they would do, or how they would react to any situation, unless they are in the thick of it.

And Appy, could you imagine if it did turn out to be a dildo? OMG, the embarrassment, say it was accidentally left on vibrate. :blushing:

Lighten up guys, tenknots was probably doing sixtyknots in a thirtyfiveknot zone and was called to task for it. And now EVERYTHING is an over-reaction.

Your such a :dork: What if it had been a bomb?? Then you would have complained that they didn't respond in a professional manner to insure the saftey of the public. People like you just need something to :gossip: about. :loser:

So you think in order to keep people from being annoyed or inconvenienced, future potential acts of violence should be ignored?

This is the second thread in a few days that I've started and has disintegrated into a mess!!!

The Sheriff's Office, the State Cops, and all the authorities involved did a superb job of handling a potentially very ugly situation. I really regret that I posted a thread asking about it.

Our public safety people deserve our respect, all the time. They put their lives on the line for us as a matter of routine. We should respond to that by being conscious that we are talking about professionals that earn more than they are ever paid, save lives, and generally are there 24/7 when we think we need them.

That said, I hope Vrai will kill this thread.

With all due respect, Railroad, you can't start a thread and expect people not to take it in another direction.

That wasn't my concern - it was the nasty comments that got to me. I hate causing such things, even indirectly.
