Dog owners in St. Mary's County are reminded they will need to purchase tags for their pets through the County Treasurer's office or duly authorized agent. Before a license can be issued, the owner will need to produce a valid rabies certificate, issued by a licensed veterinarian, certifying that the dog is currently vaccinated against rabies. All dogs four months old or older are required to have a St. Mary's County license.

Each license certificate should include the date of issuance and expiration date, the owner's name, address, home telephone number, the animal's sex, breed, age, color/markings, rabies vaccination date, rabies tag number, and animal's name. Before any unsexed license can be issued, the owner needs to produce a certificate of surgical sterilization, issued by a licensed veterinarian, certifying that the dog has been spayed or neutered.

The annual dog license fees are:

-- Unneutered Male $7.50, Unspayed Female $7.50

-- Neutered Male $2.00, Spayed Female $2.00

License tags will be issued with the license certificate. Dogs are required to wear their tag at all times, except when confined in a kennel or when participating in a competition where such display is prohibited.

The license period is concurrent with the fiscal year, July 1 to June 30. License and tag expire on June 30 of each year. New tags need to be purchased between June 1st and July 31st. Beginning August 1 of each year, there will be an additional $2.00 penalty fee per license.

Pet licenses can be obtained at the St. Mary's County Treasurer's Office with the rabies and sterilization certificate proofs or by mailing copies of these certificates with the appropriate fee and a self-addressed stamp envelope to P.O. Box 642, 23150 Leonard Hall Drive, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Checks should be made payable to the St. Mary's County Treasurer. Cats are excluded from the licensing requirement.

Does anybody actually do this, license their pet?

in calvert, you have to license your cat also. my vet just charges the extra $ when i take her for her two year visit. i don't get it, why license a dog, the cheap tags that hang from the collar fall off. Why not just make microchipping less expensive?

if you will
Interesting topic. Just found the Chuck County webpage; $5/fixed pet/yr.

I wonder what the compliance rate is....

It is to keep track of who has dogs so they can eventually start charging a pooping tax but until then they are still collecting a small revenue from it.

I wonder where the money that is paid for these license go. It would not bother me so much if I knew it was going to a non kill (or at least minimal kill) shelter.

Pet licenses in Calvert have to be renewed annually. We deal with Animal Control; who work under the Sheriff's department. ACO's have the ability to fine people for not having their animals licensed. I see it a lot with dogs that are often found running at large. I do believe people will be fined or warned and told to get a license - depending on their attitude towards the ACO! Most people do not register cats; indoor or outdoor.

An ACO told me it is easier to find the owner if they have a license on if a dog since the info is generally up to date. On the form, there are several places for phone numbers and I have trained all employees to make sure they have the owner's cell phones, home phones and work phones on the application. Microchips are great but many people do not keep their information current. Sometimes rescues register the microchips to themselves and if the new owner does not register the animal, it can lead to a long paper trail to find out who owns said animal.

We charge $7 per spay and neutered animals and I think $20 for unneutered. The form also asks for microchip info and proof of rabies.

It seems to me that St Mary's county dropped the pet licensing for a couple years and then brought it back a few years ago.

I agree 100% that was more of a joke, it leaves me curious though what the penalty is if you do not purchase the license. I know someone posted earlier that their vet does it automatically, if our vet does it they have never mentioned it.

I believe in Calvert, it is a $50 fine the 1st time, doubles after that. And I do believe a lot of the fines are given to chronic offenders and people that are argumentative and give the ACO and Sheriff's deputies "attitude".

My experience with St. Mary's is just the opposite. The "chronic offenders" are just ignored because they know no matter how hard they try they will never get them to care or pay the fines. Do you know what the fines go to? (just curiosity) One time one of my neighbors were fined $5,000 for their dog attacking one of our goats. I do not know if they ever paid it (I would assume not because it was not long after their house was foreclosed on and they left) but I have always wondered where the money would of gone if they had. I asked the Animal control officer that was out but I never did get a clear answer.

I would suppose a lien could be put against the house; which would not penalize them personally if the house was in foreclosure.
Some people should just not own animals. I hope it is more peaceful to you and your goats w/o them there.
Have you ever looked up this person/s on the MD Judicial case search? I do recall looking up a person that applied for a job and saw several animal control charges against her.
(no, she did not get asked to come in and interview!)

No, I did not look them up but YES it is way more peaceful. We are actually starting with chicks right now which is very exciting to me. We could never do that before because their dogs were extreme chick killers. We had other neighbors who had chicks and they were constantly getting in and just killing her chicks and leaving them. Sometimes they would parade them around and leave them at other peoples houses but for the most part just let them lay where they were.
