They are having a fundraising dinner on Sunday from 12 until 4 at the church hall in Ridge, it is going to be catered by Thompson's Seafood to help benefit the school as they have a budget deficit and need help to stay open, this could be their last year if enough funds are not raised.

It is on Sunday. Good food there. However in the craft room they will be having will be a internationally known "local" artist who paints outstanding highly detailed paintings on Chesapeake Bay crab shells and other nautical things. Her paintings are so detailed they look like a picture or a decal. But, they are all original paintings. No two are the same. All for about $15.00 to $20.00 each. In tocay's economy, that price can not be beat any where. Just ask any other local artist if they would sell their stuff for that kind of price. You and I both know, that won't happen. So, in their craft room, whereever that is, will be an excellent place to purchase some OUTSTANDING paintings at an an extremely reasonable price. I'm hoping to get one of her winter scene paintings to hang on my Christmas tree. Pretty neat. While I'm at it, I'll get a couple of her lighthouses on a crab shell. They all have a high gloss finish which the Christmas tree lights will reflect off of quite well. Really going there for the craft stuff more than the food. Yeah, it's on Sunday. But, boy am I looking forward to it. Can't wait.

St. Michael's School is NOT closing!

That's what we are trying to prevent. The goal you see in the graph is the present deficit, doesn't include next years shortfall which is what Father Lee is stressing in mass, he separated it so it would appear a more managable amount; in any event, they need help. Thanks.

I am sad that I am just now seeing this. I hope that SMS makes it thru one more year. Losing Holy Angels was bad enough.

One of the big issues is that if it does end up closing, parents are saying that the public school board doesn't have room to accept the students, don't know what they will do if it comes to it.

I'm not sure how many students they have but it's a fairly small school. It's such a great little school. If I had the money, that's where my kids would be going.

St. Michael's School will NOT close - this year, next, or ever! It is THE best Catholic elementary school in SMC - bar none. Test scores are high, teachers have the most experience, and the principal is more qualified than any other ADW principal in SMC! Student population has increased the last couple of years - not sure the other Catholic elementary schools can say that. The school has a computer lab that is the best - the public schools are just now trying to catch up. The school offers STEM, Spanish, and most importantly, a Catholic identity that can be seen in all students, not just in school but out in public as well! Go see for yourself - you will be pleasantly surprised............. ST. MICHAEL'S SCHOOL IS THE CROWN JEWEL OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON!

It is not that small - I think more than 150 students - but yet small enough that class sizes allow great one on one teaching when needed. Tuition assistance is available - you may be surprised at what you could afford. Set your priorities - your child's education or a new vehicle or vacation each year. A small sacrifice now will pay huge dividends in the future for your child!

I've never owned a new vehicle and I've never taken a real vacation. But thanks for your concern.

I am afraid that is part of the problem. I do not send my kids there because of that. However I try to support the school in as any other ways as I can since I went there. To know that I would be paying full price but there are others in the school that are going for less than half of what I would be paying is my main concern on this. If it is a private school than it needs to be private and everyone paying a full tuition. I am all for family discounts but not hand outs.

I understand that one point of view is that no child should be denied a catholic education if they want it. Well when I was growing up that was what Sunday School was for. Back then we also had numerous fund raisers and events such as roller skating, bake sales, spaghetti dinners, fall festivals, auctions, etc. etc. etc. Until this year all I saw was the auction and some catalogs with crap in them we never want. I would rather just give $25-$50 to the school than feel like I have to buy that stuff for the school to get what? Maybe $5.00 of a $25.00 order.

I went to Catholic gradeschool and high school up near DC in the 80's, and they were giving tuition assitance then, although it was at the discretion of the Pastor. And it was very much on a 'who's the pastor's favorite." basis. My parents paid full tuition for gradeschool and high school, but they fully support the idea of having tuition assistance, and a standardized program. Its much more fair....

How is me having to work harder and bust my ass to make sure my kids get to go to a PRIVATE school and someone else getting an assisted ride Fair?? It is Private school. If you can make the tuition, Great. If you can't then you have no reason being there.

That's the beauty of a Catholic education - the diversity of kids. If there was no tuition assistance, you would have a "private prep" school. If I wanted that, I would send my kids to a boarding school at $15,000-$30,000. I don't mind paying full price tuition at a Catholic elementary school, even if other parents are not. Our whole world economy is based on this principal - you pay higher taxes to support the social programs of those who can't afford it. At least with a Catholic education, I know what I am getting for my money, and at $4,000-$5,000 per year per student, that is an awesome deal!! You pay $10,000-$15,000 per student for a public school education..........
