Starting a Business?

Club'nBabySeals

Where are my pants?
My husband has been designing web pages and writing up little software programs as favors for friends and family for years; but recently he's had a number of requests to do so for private businesses as a "service", so we've decided it would probably be a good idea to start an official business on the side.

How does one go about the legalities? I assume we'd have to register with the county or state to get a tax ID number--what all does that entail? We're completely uneducated about the entire process and would prefer to correct that before going forward.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Get an accountant (we use Mary Ann Murray over at Murray and Wamsley). They'll advise you as to the best corporate structure to go with and most of the time they'll recommend a lawyer to do the paperwork as well. The accountant will also give you a list of agencies to contact - State of MD, IRS, etc. so you can get your tax ID #.

It's pretty simple to set up a business entity.

:yeahthat: The central graphic on the BLIS intro page says, "Click Here to start a Maryland business".

And once you get it rolling you should advertise on some popular sites... like this one.

Okay vrai, I said it... where's my dolla?
