Starting Car in the morning is against the law?

That's one way to look at it, but it's more a matter of Personal Responsibility. If you take your watch off and leave in in the open unattended, is it the thief's fault or yours for not securing it?
Dual culpability. Mine for leaving it out and the thief's for ... well, being a thief.

Nevertheless, I don't believe I'd get a fine for going into a restaurant, and leaving my watch on the table while I went off to the W.C.

If you were dumb enough to leave it unattended, you deserve to have it taken.
Maybe so - but the last time I looked irresponsibility and stupidity were not illegal.

What's funny is....

I'm keeping tabs on another thread in my hometown newspaper that is in reply to a resident of the city's letter to the editor. In said letter they wanted to know why there was an idling police car along the Veteran's Day parade route without a policeman in it. She wanted to know who paid for the gas and was irate about it.

Of course that is in a different state and the circumstances are different but I thought it was Ironic.

PS. instead of the cops giving tickets for this, why don't they give tickets to the morons who keep their vehicle running WHILE fueling??? (the excuse is, of course, to keep the vehicle warm). Sorry but when my safety is a factor your cold ass isn't a concern of mine.

The other one is people who get back in the car while fueling.... haven't these people heard of static electricity... Same goes for fueling a plastic gas can in the bed of a truck or the trunk of a car. These people should be shot on site.

Hmmmm...

I'm wondering if DEEKAYPEE isn't really JAYPEECEE?

And the way the article reads, this is Charles County Sheriffs that are enforcing the law; not SMC or Calvert.

Well, I'm doing it anyway. If some cop thinks that I'm going to sit in a freezing cold car waiting for it to warm up in the morning, they better think again. My neighbors wouldn't tattle on me anyway.
ah, the great thing about living in the middle of nowhere no neighbors in sight :dye:

Even if I shut MY engine off while fueling, there's at least 3-4 cars within 10 feet of me who have theirs running simply because they just pulled in or are just leaving.

just drive off. modern car engines not only do not need to warm up more than 10 seconds, it is actually bad for them.
motorcycles need some time, tho...

here's an idea...why don't the cops actually patrol for thieves, making sure that people's cars are not being stolen. granted, they can't be every place all the time so some will slip by - how about making the sentencing more strict for theft. any theft, period. I am tired of having to worry about being victimized all the time and here is another dumb law that gives upstanding citizens a ticket and fine instead of socking it to the low life scums of earth that should not have all of the rights they are given. this country has gone to hell!

Well, don't call the police when your car is stolen. Easy pickings that way

And what's your point???? Those vehicles have no effect on your vehicle unless of course they are physically touching.

here's your sign:stupid:

.
Can you give me the number of gasoline station fires that have been caused by someone's car running while they are filling up?

Can you give me proof of a single one?

I've seen static electricity start a fire.. people smoking starting a fire.. But I can honestly say I've never seen a car running at a gas pump start one. (well there was the Fiero, but that fire started under the hood, hard to make the connection there)

How many police cars have we seen unattended and running? Summer or Winter? I've always thought this to be a B/S law.

I think it is a rather stupid law. I can think of only two reasons
1) Politicians pandering to eco fanatics who think we are polluting.
2) A deterent to the possibility of the car being stolen.

I can relate to 2 but I don't think I would be wasting my time writing that citiation.

As far as the police cars being unattended and running. We have to use some common sense. The reality of the day is the police car is an office. Most cars have a Toughbook Laptop worth about $3500 in the car. It is key to doing the job (some dinosaurs still can't type). It literally puts dispatchers right in the car. Access to NCIC and in-house databases, typing reports etc. It is without a doubt a neccessity. Most of us our not out of our cars for long periods of time.

Shutting off the car in mid summer with the computer on is a recipe for disaster for the computer and other things (film) in the car. The public hates to see the car running. IT IS AN OFFICE. And anyone who works in an office should know that no one shuts off all the AC in mid summer overnight. Think of all the servers that would go down.

This is a PR issue that police departments need to educate people on. Not to mention the uncomfortableness of ballistic panels and how hot officers get just getting out of the car. Nothing worse than getting hot, sweaty and then have to get in to a hot car....

Forgot another thing. Police sometimes park in front of building for official business. I will leave my flashers on for visibility. I CANT LEAVE THEM ON IF THE VEHICLE IS OFF.
