And yet anothe story about Obama.

On three occasions since January, Sen. Barack Obama's passport file was looked at by three different contract workers, said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack.

The contractors accessed information in the file in an unauthorized way, he said.

Two contractors were fired and one was disciplined by the contractor's company, McCormack said.

He said the contractors are not linked.

I heard this on H & C tonight. I think it's a disgrace & they should have been fired.

Let's see how big of a deal this gets made into. I remember when the same "kind" of thing happened to Michael Steele when he was running for Senate. (Except it was his credit report & other personal information like that.) There was media coverage of it, but no one was "outraged" about it in the media.

well. just a coincidence that this should be revealed now. Just as Obama is off balance, why not throw a bugaboo into the works ?

And I've got a feeling that this is just the beginning. Can't wait to see what's next.

It has H-I-L-L-A-R-Y written all over it!

 Or it could be a nothing-burger: just idle curiosity of Obama supporters. Everything I've read said it was 3 contract employees, which means they don't work for the State Dept. but are hired by a company contracted to the State Dept.

Because, seriously - if the "Bush Administration" really wanted to find out more about Obama, Condeleeza Rice could look it up for them and no one would be the wiser.

Klinton's looked @ 100's of files ..........

"Filegate" began on June 5, 1996, when Republican Pennsylvania Congressman William Clinger, chair of the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight, announced that the committee had found during their ongoing "Travelgate" investigations, that FBI background reports on Travelgate figure Billy Dale had been delivered to the White House.[8] The following day, the White House delivered to the committee hundreds of other such files related to White House employees of the Reagan Administration and George H. W. Bush Administration.[8] Initial White House explanations for what had happened varied,[9] and Republicans made various charges, including that the file transfer was motivated by a desire to slander Dale and other White House Travel Office officials and thereby justify their dismissal.[10] At first Attorney General Janet Reno asked the FBI to look into it;[10] FBI Director Louis Freeh acknowledged that both the FBI and especially the White House had committed "egregious violations of privacy"[3][10] (in some cases the background reports contained information about extramarital affairs, trangressions with the law, and medical issues).[11] On June 21 Reno decided it was a conflict of interest for the U.S. Department of Justice to further investigate the matter, and thus recommended that it be folded into the overall umbrella of the Whitewater investigations, under charge of Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr.[8][6]

A veritable tempest in a teacup. Looks like some kids had temporary access and decided to do what "clever" and curious kids do (possibly Obama supporters) and see what more they could find on their idol.

It Wasn't Just Obama

Clinton's office says her passport files also breached

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday told Sen. Hillary Clinton that the security of her passport file were breached in 2007, according to Clinton's Senate official.

The passport files of presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain have been breached, the State Department said today. The person who improperly accessed Obama's files also viewed McCain's file, spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Why...

...would it be of any concern, at all, to Obama, or any other public figure, that someone looked at his/their passport???

Then...

It is the passport files maintained at State, not the passport.

...allow me to rephrase; Why would it be of any concern, at all, to Obama, or any other public figure, that someone looked at his/their passport files???

These are government, ie, public records.

Government records with information subject to safeguarding. It should take at minimum a FOIA request to view the documents for those without a specific need in the performance of their official duties.

...yes, of course, so, if I may re-phrase yet again;

Why would it be of any concern, at all, to Obama, or any other public figure, that someone looked at his/their passport files???

It seems to be the concern of the State Department that some contractors had done this. I'm not sure if it is an actual concern for Obama, Clinton, or McCain.

...you. I mean, George Clooney had his medical files looked at by 'unauthorized' snoopers in a hospital, but no one tried to couch it in nefarious terms. I mean, what's in the passport file that could remotely be suspicious?

Having never seen one of those files nor what they contain I wouldn't even care to speculate.
