(OAKLAND, MD) – A Maryland State Police helicopter crew assisted first responders from Garrett County with the rescue of an injured female hiker in the area of Swallow Falls yesterday morning
Shortly before 11:00 a.m. yesterday, Garret County emergency services requested the assistance of Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 5, based in Cumberland, MD, to respond to Swallow Falls after rescue personnel encountered treacherous and remote conditions with high temperatures for extraction. The hiker was a female who sustained injuries when she slipped on wet rocks on the bank of the Youghiogheny River.
Trooper 5, the Aviation Command’s helicopter arrived on scene and maneuvered the helicopter into a 150-foot hover above a rocky embankment and a Trooper/Paramedic was lowered to the river bed to prepare the patient for hoist. Trooper 5 performed a 150-foot hoist extraction of the patient within 10 minutes of arriving on scene and the patient was then transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in West Virginia for evaluation and treatment.
The Maryland State Police Aviation Command would like to thank the first responders in Garrett County and Maryland Park Service for their assistance. In addition, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command would like to remind Marylanders to exercise caution while enjoying the last few weeks of the summer weather and outdoor activities.
The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has served Maryland citizens since 1970 and operates a fleet of ten AW-139 helicopters from seven bases throughout Maryland on a 24/7/365 basis. Missions include medevac, law enforcement, search & rescue, homeland security, and disaster assessment. The success of rescues performed by the Aviation Command depends a great deal on the cooperative effort of local fire, rescue, EMS, law enforcement agencies, and our partners at the United States Coast Guard.
