State Police State Prison Inmate Death Under Investigation

(CUMBERLAND, MD) — Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive this morning in his cell at a state prison in Allegany County.

The identity of the inmate is being withheld and pending next of kin notification. He was an inmate at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Md. He was pronounced deceased at the Western Regional Medical Center.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators are conducting an investigation into this death. They are being assisted by investigators from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 1:40 a.m. this morning, a correctional officer found the victim in his cell. Immediate medical assistance was summoned and correctional officers and medical staff provided emergency care. The victim was transported to the Western Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

The scene was processed by Maryland State Police crime scene technicians. State Police investigators are continuing to conduct interviews with prison staff and inmates.

The victim’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The autopsy results are pending at this time. The investigation is continuing.
