(CUMBERLAND, MD) — Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate who was attacked yesterday at a state prison in Allegany County.
The deceased is identified as Herbert Mayes, 33 years old and an inmate at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Md. Mayes was pronounced deceased at the scene. The autopsy results are pending at this time.
Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators are conducting an investigation into Mayes’ death. They are being assisted by investigators from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
The preliminary investigation indicates that on June 8, 2019 at approximately 1:20 p.m., correctional officers responded to an altercation on the exercise yard between seven inmates, one of which was later identified as Mayes. The officers immediately took six of the inmates, not being identified at this time, into police custody and called for immediate medical assistance for Mayes. Medical staff provided emergency care until county emergency medical personnel arrived. Mayes was pronounced deceased by responding county emergency medical personnel.
The scene was processed by Maryland State Police crime scene technicians. State Police investigators are continuing to conduct interviews with prison staff and inmates.
The victim’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation is continuing.
