Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg and from the writer of Forrest Gump, The Horse Whisperer, and The Insider, is an espionage thriller similar to The Bourne Identity and it's sequel. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film, set in the early '70s, begins with the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich, Germany Summer Olympics at the hands of Palestinian terrorists. It then follows a small team of Israeli secret agents as they travel around Europe finding and assassinating the terrorist ringleaders suspected of planning the massacre. The mission sours, however, when their targets begin to retaliate in violent, unpredictable ways.
Munich, in my opinion, is a fantastic film with the suspense of Jaws, the incredible, realistic action of Saving Private Ryan, and the hard-hitting emotional force of Schindler's List. There are no major A-list stars in it, but there are a handful of recognizable faces, including: Eric Bana (the ill-fated Hector in Troy), Daniel Craig (the next James Bond, in November's Casino Royale), and Geoffrey Rush (the main villian in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl). However, if anything is left to be desired in terms of star wattage, Spielberg's masterful direction, the thrilling pace, and the emotional last act more than compensate. The film isn't for those in search of lightweight entertainment, as it deals with very heavy issues and has graphic, realistic violence, but if you're a fan of smart, thrilling films I 100% recommend this Academy Award-nominated, Spielberg-directed epic.
Did anyone else see it? Anyone planning on renting it? I would love to hear more thoughts on this film, which I believe is very important and well-made.
