Stinky dog

I have a beautiful fluffy husky, who is stinky? Yes she gets a bath every two weeks, with doggie smell good shampoo, and she is on the senior food that the vet recommends. Our other dog eats the same food and we use the same shampoo and he doesn’t smell. So do Husky’s need a special shampoo or is she just ment to be stinky? We love her either way but her smelling good would be nice. Any suggestions? :geek:

stinky as in... she smells like yeast?

I have garlic breath.
Are you thoroughly drying her off after her baths? Huskies have very thick undercoats. If left too wet after a bath (especially when she is bathed so frequently) bacteria can grow.

Every 2 wks is a lot of bathing. By over bathing, you are stripping the dog's coat of the oils it needs to keep it healthy, and to keep their skin healthy. They might be producing too much of the oils to overcompensate, making them stink.

I would have to agree with Jameo. You are bathing a little too frequently for this breed especially because of their thick under coats. We have two husky's and we bath them every few months, due to taking forever to dry and they are naturally clean dogs. Our youngest gets bathed more often if she gets into stuff which she tends to do. We also try and dry them very very well. I take a blow dryer to them as well for as long as they will tolerate it.

true... but even when I have bathed my GSD (as most breeders do when they show them) he still didnt have "a smell"

Im going to say its a yeast or bacterial infection the dog has. (I know my hounds are known to have a yeasty smell to them... :barf: and they need a special shampoo to take care of that)

I have clippers you can borrow :)

Then you'll know whether its a funky coat or funky skin... Funky, that funky husky.... oh wait, wrong song.....

Maybe the "doggie smell good shampoo" they are using irritating the skin leading to the infection?

Lots of time it could be cause by food, allergies, skin developing bacteria from not getting good air circulation... and then turns into a yeast infection (smells like a bakery) or then the animal starts with hot spot/ pyoderma's from skin staying moist and not drying out all the way.

 I could send a video to AFV of my dog when mom gets out the blow dryer. He barks and bites at it and won't let it get anywhere near his body.

Thanks all! It's not a yeast smell, just stinky dog.
I'll chill out on the by monthly baths for her, and just wash her feet off (she likes to dig). Hopefully she will smell good soon.

I just let ours clean their feet themselves unless it is mudd or caked on.

Annie- My youngest does the same thing. She tries to bite it and then will bark at it. She also bites at the shower water. I have a strange dog. But she keeps me laughing.

 He attacks the water from the hose like it's a slice of cake!

I have to agree. Could have come from overbathing, but could have come with the dog if it was newly aquired.
and maybe that is why the owners felt like they neede to bath him.

Personally if it is yeast and you do not show, I would take the dog to the groomers and have them shave the dog for the summer. This way the skin will get plenty of air and wont habor bactiera.

You can look up natural remedies with an Apple Cider Vinegar base and spritz the dog with it, lightly, every day for a week or two. The dog will smell like vinegar for a bit but ACV has natural antifungal /anti bacterial properties, and its cheap.

I would never bath a dog more than once a month and some breeds less often than that. If they get muddy hose their feet etc... but dont use soap.
And then make sure you dry them well as every one has already said.

I hope this helps!

:yahoo: She is stinky no more!! I have no idea how or what she did but she finally smells like a normal dog! She even rewarded herself by sleeping on the couch. I found a brush that will help with the mud (she likes to dig and then roll in the mud) rather than having to bath her so much. Thank you all so much for your advice. :buddies:
