Thomas Stone’s AVID program recently held a signing day ceremony for its college-bound seniors who earned $3.2 million in scholarship offers.

College Signing Day was May 1, and Thomas Stone High School AVID’s underclassmen celebrated their peers who are on their way to college in the fall.

The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program improves college readiness for all students, with a focus on those who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

Seniors Ne’Kara Smith and DeAndre Watson have been involved with AVID since they were in eighth grade at Mattawoman and John Hanson middle schools, respectively.

On Wednesday, they were named the top AVID female and male scholarship earners at Thomas Stone for the Class of 2019. Smith netted more than $1 million in offers and Watson earned $838,000. While Watson is slated to play football for McDaniel College, most of the money came from their academic achievements, said Ava Morton, Stone’s college and career advisor.

Watson plans to major in business management with a concentration in sports marketing. Smith, who always had a mind for numbers, wants to be an accountant. Accepted to 44 colleges and universities, she starts classes at Morgan State University in the fall.

Gwen Todd, Stone’s AVID coordinator, said the school’s 20 AVID seniors earned more than $15 million in scholarship offers.
