Son suspected as 5 in Iowa family slain
Three high school girls and their parents were found dead Saturday morning at their home in eastern Iowa, and the couple's son was arrested in Illinois and considered a suspect, officials said.

The victims were found shot at about 4 a.m. near Bonaparte, according to the Van Buren County sheriff's office. It was not immediately clear what prompted the slayings.

Shawn Bentler, 22, was arrested Saturday in Quincy, Ill., on an unrelated charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, the Van Buren County sheriff's office said. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said he is a suspect in the slayings.

Quincy is about 57 miles southeast of the family's home.

Parents Michael Bentler, 53, and Sandra Bentler, 47, were found dead with their daughters Sheena Bentler, 17, Shelby Bentler, 15, and Shayne Bentler, 14, Van Buren County authorities said.

The Harmony school district confirmed three of its female high school students—a freshman, sophomore and senior-and their parents were killed.

The slayings shocked residents of this eastern Iowa town, located about 145 miles southeast of Des Moines. "The whole town knew the family," resident Marilyn Thomas said. "This is only a town of 465 people."

School officials said they will have counselors available Monday to speak with grieving students.

Sorry Vrai, I disagree, rarely can I recall while growing up, someone killing their entire family-maybe if I Google I'll be proven wrong. It just seems to be falling within "the norm" lately. At least 1X a week or more some sick twist is killing their family or loved ones. I'm sure by the time it all comes out this man will have a serious drug problem (meth or crack)-from what I've read-he was well liked and loved......
The Police Executive Research Forum, a think tank that serves many of the nation's police departments, examined the murder and robbery stats in 53 U.S. cities for the first six months of this year. Murder was up in 26 of 53 cities—and robberies rose in 43 of 53 jurisdictions. For all jurisdictions reporting to the group, murder was up 4 percent.
Police say the crime wave has been triggered by a lethal combination of increased gang activity, violent offenders returning from prison and kids who have easy access to guns. No doubt, this poses enormous challenges for law enforcement officials, who need to come up with new strategies to combat a problem that affects entire communities, the cops just can't arrest their way out of this. This is a very complex issue and it's going to require an enormous amount of resources.

It's really nothing new, here are some that were fairly easy to find.
October 1831 – After attending a four-day religious revival, Stephen Miller beat his two children to death and nearly murdered his wife in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in what the papers described as a “religious phrenzy” and “melancholy occurrence of fanaticism.”

July 1843 – A man living near Bowling Green, Kentucky, despondent over his debts, killed his child and nearly killed his wife and himself.

December 1869 – George Barton, a saddler and drunkard, killed his wife and three small children near Nashville, Tennessee, cutting their throats as they lay in bed.

June 1875 – After losing his mill job and going west on a fruitless trip to find work, John Kemmler returned home to Springfield, Massachusetts. He was immediately ordered to vacate his company-owned apartment. After sending his wife on a shopping errand, he tried to poison, and then shot and killed, his three children. He then went to a tavern, where he was arrested. He admitted the crime and said he was unable to support the family, did not want his daughters to grow up to become prostitutes, and that they were better off in Heaven.

January 1882 – A farmer living near Lancaster, Kentucky, killed his wife, mother, and daughters, then hung himself. He feared that his family was going to die of starvation, though he owned a 250-acre farm and was worth quite a bit of money.

August 1890 – A man who had been placed in an insane asylum for paying “too close attention to the details of his business” escaped the asylum, went to his home in Dwight, Illinois, and shot and killed his wife, two children, and himself.

January 1893 – A cigar dealer from Memphis, Fred Schuman, melancholy over the death of his wife and suffering from “financial embarrassments,” poisoned himself and his two children with arsenic.

January 1893 - A man described as a “Bohemian ex-priest” murdered his two small children in Baltimore.

May 1893 – In Connellsville, Pennsylvania, John Hoy killed his wife, two children, and himself. He had been suspended from his railway job six weeks before for drunkenness and was heavily in debt.

April 1896 – A Chicago railway driver named John Lehman feared that his family would starve to death, and he killed his three children and himself. He had $1,500 in the bank.

October 1897 – A farmer who lived near Blue Earth City, Minnesota, encountered business troubles and killed his wife, sons, and himself.

March 1903 – A farmer near St. Louis killed his wife and six children with a sledgehammer, then slit his own throat and died the next day.
I think we are just being exposed to it more as was expressed by the all knowing Board Mommy.

But how often do we see a child (at 22 he is still the child) kill his parents and family? The timeline you posted shows death at the hands of the husband but not death at the hands of a child. I do think that there is more of that in today's age than in the past.

Does it really matter which family member is the whacked out one that does the killing. And using your logic of "at 22 he is still a child" even those murderous fathers were someone's child, weren't they?

The reason people seem to think that there is more of that today is two-fold; quicker information sharing and a sh!t load more people in the world.

Not a child at 22. He's been around long enough to know what is right and wrong. If he didn't know it was wrong he wouldn't run from the scene of the crime.

My father is in his 60’s and I’m a little over 20 years young than that but I’m still his child. :peace:

And no, it does not matter which family member is out of whack but I do think we see more children (of whatever age) going into a murderous rage in today’s age and killing their parents (classmates too) than ever before. You mentioned ‘population’ and the ‘Internet’ as valid reasons for this increase, but that could be more along the lines of planting the seed of thought in those that do it? And anytime you have an increase in population, you are going to have more crime.

When I first read the article, I thought the same thing BlackSheep thought and that is, this kid had a serious drug problem.

There is more murderous rage than ever before, I can agree with that. People think nothing of killing another because we have lost our desire to make them pay for their acts. Plea bargains, time off for good behavior, years being coddled on death row and numerous appeals, the many states dropping the death penalty, and not allowing law-abiding citizens to defend themselves have in my mind all led to a more evil society. It has become a time when defending one's self is now a crime, but that's another topic.

It is a lack of upbringing. Shrugging off little deviations from societal norms turns into shrugging off moderate societal norms, and pretty soon you have a an entire strata of society shrugging off what it means to be civilized.

It could. I was thinking a better example would be the lack of civility and decorum in the bridge jumper thread. You know like when as a child, peoples parents don't whack them in the melon when they run their pie holes in a manner that is insensitive and lacks civility and decorum they just grow up to mouth off even more.

It would be interesting to see what the ages were of the people Ken posted about. I bet a lot of them were in their early 20's. People married a lot earlier back then, so lots of 20-something men would be husbands and fathers.

Had to take a class a few years back on shaken-baby syndrome. Statistically, it is men in their early to mid 20's who loose it and snap, shaking a baby to death. It stands to reason that the same types would also be more prone to commit other crimes of rage. Who makes you angriest? It's always the people closest to you.
