Storm Shelter/Safe Room

I was wondering if anyone knows of a local company that builds storm shelters? Our house doesn't have a basement and I was considering purchasing a shelter so that our family has someplace to go in the event of a tornado. Any recommendations would be great.

Personally I think this would be a waste of money, but if you're willing to deal with LU&GM and add to the bottom line of a small business, then more power to you.

I appreciate your opinion but we have had a tornado hit our home before so this is money I don't mind spending. Who is LU&GM?

Land Use & Growth Management - a.k.a. the place where your permit paperwork gets lost, found after you re-file, approved, then denied, then approved again after you pay for new site plans and surveys.

Just curious, you'd be willing to spend a large portion of money based on one storm in an area that traditionally is not known for tornado activity? Instead of building a separate structure have you considered the feasibility of reinforcing an interior room like a bathroom or closet? Is your house on a slab or a crawlspace?

Yes, I am considering a safe room in my garage. The cost is not too great for either. I have done some research and know what I need to pay to have one shipped and installed. Just wondering if anyone does them local. My house is on a crawspace but my garage has a slab. I was considering putting a safe room in there. I have also looked into porch pods too. I am gathering all of my options and will then make a decision. Which ever I choose will also make a fun "fort" for the kids. lol Multifunctional.

I like the safe room in the garage as long as you're willing to sacrifice storage space. But I think letting the kids use it as a fort would definitely put you up there for cool parent of the year.:high5: I asked about the crawlspace because if it can be made accessible from inside the house, (trapdoor) then I'd consider maybe excavating a Saddam Hussein spider hole type deal, but the safe room in the garage sounds like more fun and a possible DIY project.

True, letting go of the storage space is hard. I just got a quote on an underground (in garage) shelter that doesn't take up any space. It is about 6K installed. That's not too bad, I think. They just cut a hole in the cement and put the watertight pod in. It has a flush sliding door strong enough that you can drive over it if you need to. It's a thought . . .

I wish I had the time and knowledge to do something myself. I'm not that talented. :)

Wow, sounds interesting! Would you mind posting info on the company that gave you the quote? A shelter would be handy not only for tornadoes, but any SHTF situation!
