Posted by an OPRC member living in Southern MD: was out last night for shots and coggins. She told me that there is an outbreak of Strangles in our area. It started when one Amish horse who had strangles but was getting over it was sold at an local auction
to another Amish farmer he took the horse home and all of his horses
came down with Strangles as well as several other farmers whom he had
visited. Please take caution when taking your horse out. Don't let them
sniff or greet other horses don't let them eat grass in areas where
other horses might have been grazing don't use community drinking
troughs or share your water buckets with others right now. I DONT want
to spread panic but I DO want everyone to protect their horses. The
strangles virus can last a long time laying dormant and it's a nasty
nasty virus.
