I just planted a hanging pot with 24 plants...I hope it does well.

Also put out two 18" tomato plants was it too early to stick them out?

In the ground, yes. Tomaotes like warm weather/warm soil. If they are in pots you can take them outside during the warm days and bring them in at night. Temps are supposed to drop to (near) freezing at night this weekend.

Although they are cooler weather plants, I would cover them (just to be safe) unless you're trying to make frozen foods.

Here is a current Freeze Watch for Home (Dowell, MD) until 8:00am, Sat Apr 7 2007
______________________________________________

FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH
SATURDAY MORNING...

UNSEASONABLY COLD AIR IS MOVING INTO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION.

OVERNIGHT LOW TEMPERATURES THURSDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHTS ARE EXPECTED TO DROP INTO THE 20S EAST OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS.

THIS WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO DO DAMAGE TO FRUIT TREES WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEGUN TO BLOOM.

PEOPLE WITH AGRICULTURAL INTERESTS SHOULD CLOSELY
MONITOR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTS...AND BE PREPARED TO
TAKE ACTION SHOULD A FREEZE WARNING BE ISSUED.

THE COLD WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEKEND.

A FREEZE WATCH MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE POSSIBLE.
THESE CONDITIONS COULD KILL CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION.

(Sorry about the CAPS, it came that way and I'm not fixing it)

Yes, it's definitely way too early to put out tomato plants. The average frost-free date for this area isn't until April 15th.

If you've planted them in the ground, you can cover the plants with a row cover (spunbound polyester sheeting) or a cloche to prevent frost damage. A cheap cloche can be made by cutting the bottom out of a gallon milk jug. You just plop it over top of the plant and it will keep it warm enough overnight. Just make sure you remove it if the temperature rises above 60 or so else you'll cook the plants.
