The problem with a disease like this is that required vaccination (the article doesn't say whether Michelle received the vaccine or not) makes the E.R.'s not think of dieases like this in the first case that shows up in the E.R. Once the word gets out that bacterial meningitis is in the community, the staff level of suspicion goes up.

According to the articles I've read today the vaccination is only 80-90% effective? Also, students can refuse the vaccine due to religious reasons. (required does not equal mandatory)

Rumor on campus is that she had been vaccinated.

Regardless, what a shame the poor girl was in such agony that she visited the ER twice in the same day, and they never admitted her.

At least she died in her mother's arms. :bawl:

In the article...."The last fatal case of meningitis at IUP happened in 1993. Since then, all students living in dorms, including Khirkhah, have been required to be vaccinated."

I am taking that she was from what the article said, but then again jsut because they are required does not mean some did not slip through the hole.

Go Braves!
Same thing happened to my 4 year old nephew this past fall. His parents took him to the ER 3 times before he was admitted and then it still took another 12 or so hours for them to actually decide to test for Meningitis. Test was positive, after the doctors insisted he didn't have it....
