"ROSWELL — A Roswell police officer was removed from school campuses after turning a pregnant 18-year-old student over to immigration authorities.

Police Chief John Balderston defended the action by Officer Charlie Corn, a 10-year veteran who was working at Roswell High School as a student resource officer.

But he said Roswell Independent School District Superintendent Michael Gottlieb had asked for Corn's removal "because he didn't want the officer checking on the immigration status of the students."

So when it comes to law enforcement the School district superintendent trumps the police?

Weird.

And if they ever have a shooting in that school, I hope the police tells the superintendent to handle it his own ####ing self.

Balderston said Acosta, who is five months pregnant, was deported to Mexico. "In the course of an investigation, if we determine that someone is not here legally, we will contact (federal immigration officials) and tell them what their status is," he said.
David Urias, a San Antonio, Texas, attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, said the organization was looking into whether the police had acted properly.
I don't think I'll ever understand the logic behind "looking into whether the police had acted properly" on an issue like this. Was she an illegal alien, or not? If she was, it seems clear they acted properly. If not, THEN look into how they conducted business.

Last week, the district and police department decided to remove all school resource officers, the Roswell Daily Record reported.

"It's not just people coming from Mexico; we have concerns about Middle Eastern men," the chief said. "If we don't check (immigration status), if we turn our back, we are doing our country a disservice."
Sounds like the police said just what you did - "fine, if you don't want us doing our job, we don't need to be there".
