Charles Co. Students dive into Sea Perch Regional Robotics Competition

The Sea Perch Regional Robotics Competition was held March 16 during the History, Industry, Technology and Science (HITS) Expo at St. Charles High School. Sea Perch is an underwater robotics program during which students and teachers build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).

William A. Diggs Elementary School’s team, Jaws, won first place in the Engineering Notebook category and third place in the obstacle course category. Jaws was named the best overall team at the competition and will represent the region at the Sea Perch national competition on June 1 and 2 at the University of Maryland, College Park. The team is made up of fifth graders Gianna Cheng, Kyla Grooms and Charles Houston-Anderson. It is coached by science teacher Michael Johnson and kindergarten teacher Traci Davis.

Sea You Later, another team from Diggs, took second place in the obstacle course category. Johnson and Davis coach the team made up of fourth graders Tylor McAlpine and Kristopher Johnson and fifth grade Joshua Longmire. The Sabastian team from Milton M. Somers Middle School took third place in the engineering notebook category. Team members are eighth graders Zoë Hakim, Sammie Vignualt and T.J. Taylor. The team is coached by technology teacher Robert Adamson.
