Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) recently partnered with Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) to host a virtual elementary math challenge. Teams competed through an online platform called Breakout EDU to complete math problems. The math challenge is open annually to students in Grades 4-5 and features a team and individual competition. Students from 20 CCPS elementary schools participated in the challenge.
Grade 4 awards
The team from Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School earned first place among competing fourth-grade teams. Students on the team include Madalynn Deavers, Liam Gibney, Ean Kumbar, Olivia Maletto, Cason Specht, Dylan Thompson and Jace Williams. Team coach is Mitchell teacher Corrie Wutka.
Mary H. Matula Elementary School’s fourth-grade team won second place, followed by the team from Dr. James Craik Elementary School in third place, the team from C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School in fourth place and the team from Gale-Bailey Elementary School in fifth place.
The top three individual scorers among competing fourth graders were Colin Andres, first place, Craik; Samy Arib, second place, Barnhart; and Caden States, third place, Berry Elementary School.
Grade 5 awards
The team from Barnhart earned first place among competing fifth-grade teams. Students on the team include Aneese Awkard, Brooklyn Cannon, Jaylen Meek, Aiden Mobley, Kidus Samuel and Johnny Tran. The team coach is Barnhart teacher Kristin Boyd.
Mitchell’s fifth-grade team earned second place, followed by the team from Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School in third place, the team from Craik in fourth place and the team from Mary B. Neal Elementary School in fifth place.
The top three individual scorers among competing fifth graders were Kidus Samuel, first place, Barnhart; Marcellus White, second place, Higdon; and Johnny Tran, third place, Barnhart.
