Two Charles County Public Schools students were recently named winners in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest. The contest was open to students in Grades 5-8 and featured the theme of “The Women’s Suffrage Campaign.”
The student winners are Rohey Savage, fifth grader at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School, and Nya Whitney, fifth grader at Dr. James Craik Elementary School. Savage earned a first-place award in the Charles County contest and advances to the state-level competition. Whitney earned a third place award at the county level.
Both Savage and Whitney will be honored in an awards ceremony to be held later this spring at the Maryland Veterans Memorial Museum in Glasva. The student’s work also will be on display at the ceremony.
In their essays, students had to discuss the women’s suffrage campaign and history of the passing of the 19th Amendment by the U.S. Congress. The 19th Amendment granted all American women the right to vote and hold elective office. In their essays, students were also asked to address the impact the women’s suffrage movement had on Americans politically and socially. The Port Tobacco Chapter of the organization coordinated the contest.
All state winners advance to a divisional level of competition, of which those winners are eligible to compete at the national level for a monetary award.
