Suggestions for a new puppy

We are considering purchasing a new family dog and would love some opinions/suggestions on what type to consider. We have twin 17-month-old twins, so a breed that is good with children is a must! We thought about Golden Retrievers, but I'm not a big fan of dogs that profusely shed. Any suggestions?

My recommendation is rather than focus on any specific breed, you should begin researching pets available through local rescue organizations and find the dog that already displays the temperment and personality you seek. This is especially important with having such young children. This will give you an opportunity to "screen" and "interview" the dogs, so to speak before you make a final commitment. The folks that foster these pets will be able to assist you in identifying which dogs match your specifications. The bonus of going with a grown dog versus a pup is that you will not have to deal with the initial puppy training that is very time consuming and not always successful. With having twin toddlers on your hands, you want to keep the introduction of a dog into the family as simplified as possible. Good Luck!

Good idea. Thanks! I'll look into some of the rescue facilities.

I AGREE 100%! I got my Rescue last week from Tri-County and she's the best dog! Fully housebroken, gets along with ALL the other animals, no aggression towards anyone and just a sweetie! PLUS, her days were numbered! If you take the time and check them out one by and and make sure to take them out of their cage and SEE how they interact WITH all your family members...the better! I'm so glad she's over that puppy stage! GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SEARCH! Check out Petfinder.com! That's how I initially came across her or GO to your local Rescues and be sure and let them know what you are looking for in a pet!

You should also take into account what breed will most fit your lifestyle and living arrangements. Where you live and how much time you plan to spend exercising your animal should all be factors in the breed you select.

I suggest a beagle. Ours is great with the kids although they are much older than yours. ours is also great with our new kitten. She was easy to house train and things like that.

My 2 cents:
I suggest a Labradoodle. 1/2 Poodle 1/2 Labradore. A gentle giant. (75 lbs)
The Poodle doesn't shed. The Lab does. The mix sheds a tiny bit.
I have one and I have a daycare with kids of all ages who play with him and pull his ears and even try to ride him. He just doesn't care. He naps with the kids. He follows them all over the back yard. He is very protective. I'm telling you, this is a sweet-heart of a dog.

Go to the pound and save a life! (And some money).
