Dog Dies After Being Left in Hot Car

A dog died of apparent heat trauma after being left inside a car while its owner played at the Hains Point Golf Course, according to the Washington Humane Society, which is investigating the death.

The 75-pound male boxer mix was found by U.S. Park Police shortly after they received a call at 5 p.m. Wednesday reporting that the dog had been inside the vehicle for an hour, Humane Society officials said. One window was cracked about an inch. The dog, which had been panting heavily, collapsed, the officials said.

Park Police removed the dog from the unlocked car and attempted to revive the animal by pouring water on it. The 3-year-old dog died a half-hour later.

Humane Society officials said that even when vehicles are parked in the shade with the windows down, temperatures inside can rise high enough to cause heatstroke, irreversible brain damage or death. They urged anyone who sees a dog in a parked vehicle to call the Humane Society.

I don't understand why someone would leave their dog inside a car. To me, that is like leaving your child in the car when you go inside the store to go shopping. It is just wrong!!!

It depends I think, I am truly against leaving a beastie in a car in the kind of heat or cold that will threaten their life, however, I have taken my beast for car rides because he simply adores them, and left him for a short time. I'm talking no more than 10 minutes with windows cracked atleast 3 inches, in weather no hotter than 60 degrees. As it begins to warm up out there, it will no longer be that way, he'll be at home snug in his AC, or will take rides with me that require no getting out, such as anywhere with a drive thru. It really is a matter of common sense, something some people either do not have or do not care to exercise. I'd like to see animal cruelty laws closer to that of the human cruelty laws.

Have they put the owner in the car yet? :frown:

I'm all for that too, tie them up, lock the doors and let them fry. With all the warning about heat and being left in a car, there is no reason anyone or any pet should die in a hot fricken car.
