Dog Dies After Being Left in Hot Car
A dog died of apparent heat trauma after being left inside a car while its owner played at the Hains Point Golf Course, according to the Washington Humane Society, which is investigating the death.
The 75-pound male boxer mix was found by U.S. Park Police shortly after they received a call at 5 p.m. Wednesday reporting that the dog had been inside the vehicle for an hour, Humane Society officials said. One window was cracked about an inch. The dog, which had been panting heavily, collapsed, the officials said.
Park Police removed the dog from the unlocked car and attempted to revive the animal by pouring water on it. The 3-year-old dog died a half-hour later.
Humane Society officials said that even when vehicles are parked in the shade with the windows down, temperatures inside can rise high enough to cause heatstroke, irreversible brain damage or death. They urged anyone who sees a dog in a parked vehicle to call the Humane Society.
