Summer activities for kids?

Looking for some ideas for things to do for my boys this summer, day trips / inexpensive / free / close by?

They are between 8 -12 and active.

While thinking of my own ideas, I was trying to find a place to take them horseback riding around here, and couldn't come up with anything except St. Mary's River Horse Stables, I called and they no longer do guided trail riding.

Thanks in advance for your input. :howdy:

There are several local beaches -- ie Elm's Beach & if you can get on base, there's a small beach there. Also, there's a mini-golf place in Hollywood near Thompson's Furniture and the Nursery (Greenery?), where they also have a batting cage and driving range. Not too expensive & I saw kids of all ages there.

Gilbert Run Park in La Plata is nice. They offer paddle and kayaks for a small rental fee. There is a huge play area (though your kids might be too old for it) and many picnic tables to enjoy a meal.

Sandy Point State Park is near the Bay Bridge. It's a drive (though not too long) but it's a great beach and you can fish, too. :yay:

My kids like the Calvert Marine Museum. We also like to drive up to the zoo in DC.

I took the boys last year and they dressed up like girls.

Of course, my camera batteries died and I didn't get a picture.

I looked up Gilbert Run Park, and someone posted a review that they charge a fee, is it per person fee, or per car?

Sounds like fun, thanks for all the ideas!

The Great Mills Swimming pool.

Point lookout is nice during the week too. Last year I took the kids quite often after I would get off work to go swimming.

My boys go to summer camp through parks and rec which they really enjoy but it is kind of pricey if they go most of the summer.

There is no entrance fee to the park. If you want to ride the paddle boats or kayaks, it's just a few bucks. I can't remember though, if it's per 1/2-hour or per person.

It's 4 bucks per car to enter the park on weekends, not sure if there's a fee on weekdays. :yay:

Really? I've been there several times on the weekend and never had to pay anything.
