Charles Co. Summer school starts July 7 online, make-up courses free this year

The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) summer school program begins online July 7. Courses available will use a mix of Microsoft Teams instruction and the Apex Learning platform. Students can take a maximum of two make-up courses during summer school. The cost of make-up courses has been waived by CCPS this year. Summer school also offers four courses for original credit and are $300 each. All courses run July 7 through Aug. 6. A summer school graduation ceremony is to be determined.

Registration

Parents and students can register online starting 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 17. Registration is required online through ParentVue and ends 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 24. In order to register a child for a summer school course, parents must have an active ParentVue account. School counselors are entering course recommendations for students. To register, parents should login and then select the Online Registration tab located in the upper-right hand menu area. If a course is not listed, parents should contact their child’s school counselor.

Enrollment in any summer school course is on a first come, first-serve basis. Payment for original credit courses is available by credit and debit card payment through My School Bucks. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Available courses: make-up courses

The following high school make-up courses are available through online summer school.

  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II
  • Algebra with trigonometry and statistics
  • Earth systems
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English I, II, III and IV
  • U. S. History
  • World History
  • Local, State and National (LSN) government
  • Spanish I and II

Middle school make-up classes include language arts, math, science and social studies for Grades 6-8.

Students enrolling in a make-up course will meet for 30 minutes daily, Monday through Thursday, using the Microsoft Teams platform. Teachers will present virtual lessons using Teams and the meetings are mandatory. Students will then use Apex to complete quizzes, assigned classwork and tests. In order to pass a make-up course, students must complete all work assigned in Apex.

Students will not receive credit for any make-up course if they miss more than two Teams lessons. Students and parents should review the summer school attendance policy posted here on the CCPS website before signing up for a make-up course.

Audit format for students in need of course refresher

Students who would like to take a make-up course to review course content, but not for a grade, can register to take the course as an audit. There is no cost for students who want to take a make-up course in the audit format. Students who want to take a course in an audit format must contact their school counselor to enroll. This is an option for students who may have passed a course, but are not confident in their abilities with course content.

Available courses: original credit courses

Students can register for original credit courses in English III, English IV, Fit for Life/Health, and Personal Financial Literacy. The cost of each course is $300. Students are not officially registered for a course until payment is processed.

Students enrolling for an original credit course will meet daily, Monday through Thursday, on Teams for one hour. All Teams meetings are mandatory and students will complete assignments, quizzes and classwork using Apex. Students must complete and pass all work in Apex to receive course credit.

Students will not receive credit for any original credit course if they miss more than two Teams lessons. Students and parents should review the summer school attendance policy posted on the CCPS website before signing up for an original credit course.

Grade reports

Summer school progress reports will be available on ParentVue on July 22. Final grades will be posted in ParentVue after summer school ends.

Summer school refunds

Refunds are offered for any canceled course or by email request submitted by 2 p.m. on July 7. Refund requests must be sent by email to Mike Heiser at mheiser@ccboe.com. Email requests should include the student name, identification number, name of the course to refund, amount to refund, reason for withdrawal and mailing address. Refunds are not given if a student is removed from summer school for a violation of the CCPS Code of Student Conduct or attendance policy. Refunds may take 30 days to process.
