PGPD Suspect in Custody for Cottage City Fatal Shooting on New Year's Day

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and charged a man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on New Year’s Day in the town of Cottage City. The suspect is 21-year-old Brandon Leonard of Chantilly, VA. He is charged with the murder of 36-year-old Oluwatosin Adetula of Hyattsville.
On January 1, 2025, at approximately 10:40 pm, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3300 block of Bladensburg Road where they located Adetula in a parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Adetula died of his injuries on January 7, 2025.

Through various investigative techniques, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Leonard. The PGPD’s Fugitive Unit located him in Winchester, VA, and with the assistance of the Winchester Police Department, he was taken into custody on Wednesday.


The preliminary investigation revealed Adetula was working as a rideshare driver at the time of the murder. Preliminary, detectives believe the motive to be robbery.


Leonard is charged with first and second-degree murder and related charges. He remains in Winchester pending extradition to Prince George’s County. This remains an active investigation.


The Prince George’s County Police Department investigates all murders in the town of Cottage City.
