Swollen Ears

My dogs ears began swelling at their tips late last week. The other night, we found the swelling was rising up. I Googled it and found it could be either filled with blood or puss, and either way you should puncture it to relieve the swelling. So we did. It was filled with blood. We squeezed it out (blagh), but it returned again last night. Squeezed again.

I'm a new doggie owner and realize this will probably turn into a vet visit, but just wondering if anyone had any experiences like this and insight??

And note...this swelling doesn't seem to hurt her at all. Even when we were manipulating her ear, she didn't flinch.

if it feels like a ketchup packet under the skin, it sounds like a hematoma(sp?). My old golden had it a couple times and the vet will have a couple different options. they can either lance it and drain it all at once but that will leave scar tissue. the other option is to put a plastic tube in with a cap and you'll have to purge the blood a couple times a day. mine had it a couple times and multiple trips to the vet before it went away.

My mom's dog had that a few times. This is definately something for the vet to handle.

So I checked in with the vet and they said I can continue to "squeeze" or come in so they can put in drains. Ewe.

My male boxer had that swelling on top of his head. His eyes were almost swollen shut. I gave him a benedryl. It went away during the night, but the next day it went to his left ear. Gave him another couple of benedryl during that day. It went away and seems to be fine.
