Charles Co. System updates attendance notification procedures for parents

Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has updated its attendance notification procedures for parents.

Beginning today, parents will now receive two automated phone calls – one in the morning and one in the evening – if their child is marked absent at school. For high school students, parents will receive an absentee phone call at 9 a.m. if their child is marked absent. Phone calls for absent middle-and elementary-school students will go out at 10:30 a.m. The time frame allows for teachers and staff at all three levels to take and record student attendance.

Prior to today, parents received only one phone call notification at 6 p.m. if their child was marked absent at school. The updated procedures include two phone calls so parents can be aware of an issue if their child is not at school in the morning.

CCPS absentee notifications include two daily automated phone calls; the addition of a parent letter after a student misses five days of school; a parent meeting after 10 absences; and a possible attendance review by the school system after a student misses 15 days of school. Parents and students who have a history of chronic truancy may be referred for intervention at any time.
