tablets or laptops ...??

I want one or the other. Yes, I'm ready to come into the 21st centry. Which way do I go? I know nothing about either one. I am just sick and tired of this big pc taking up desk space. Help. TIA

I like laptops better,
the keyboard is real and easier to use for people like me.

other than that it is personal choice.

best bet is to go to best buy or somewhere that has the on display and play with each one to see what the best fit for you is.

I don't know how you could replace parts in a tablet when it's necessary. Laptops, on the other hand, can be resurrected by replacements.

Prefer the laptop but make sure the form-factor is what you want. Mine vary from a subcompact from Gateway to a 'lugable' multimedia-videogamers XPS from Dell.

:yeahthat: at a comparable price, the features and abilities of a laptop greatly exceed a tablets.

... but tablets look cool

We did a video conference with an Ipad using Facetime (I think) so we could have a quorum at our board of directors meeting.

and work brings yet another issue.
with a tablet, its hard to hide the fact that you are posting on somd while in the meeting, but with a laptop you can pretend that you are typing the minutes or something, the upright screen will hide somd or that poker game or the porn.

I have both. I use the laptop to surf the Internet but use the tablet for everything else. The tablet is small and more portable but the screen size is too small to read most web sites and if links are close together pressing the correct link can be impossible unless you resize first. However, the "apps" that I have downloaded (most are free) provide a much better user interface than web pages (very user friendly and readable).

Thanks ya'll. I do have wifi and the point about fixing the tablet is something I didn't even think of, so thanks, Lurk!

Get a Laptop for your everyday needs such as paying bills, typing documents, household budget, your daycare business, etc.
Use Kindle Fire or iPad for reading books on Kindle/iPad, playing games, reading SOMD forums, facebook, etc. This way you can take it with you to your doctor appointments, traveling, or anywhere in the house and you don't want to sit at the computer and sit in your comfy chair.

I have desktops, a laptop, and just bought an ipad2. I'm still getting used to the tablet, but I'll try to list some pros and cons.

Desktop - bigger monitor, some applications are faster, larger cache (don't need to reboot as often). Other than that, not a lot of difference. Oh, and I can run stereo and my game console through the PC and monitor for sound and screen.

Laptop - portability is the big plus. With the size of storage and RAM nowadays, as well as processing speed, you probably won't notice a lot of difference in performance from a laptop to a PC. Depending on what you buy, price differential isn't all that great any more, though laptops are still somewhat pricier than PCs.

Tablets - as I said, I looked long and hard at different tablets, but went with the ipad2 in large part because of the size. It's got a larger viewing area and it's a beautiful picture. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I find that as an older person, I'm not as enamored with the touch screen as maybe some people are, but I also bought it because it can be accessorized with peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, and players.

One thing I didn't realize was that the ipad is itself a peripheral to your PC (or MAC). I really thought I was buying a stand-alone computer; self-contained and all that.

One thing I did do was buy a Logitech keyboard cover. It's a brushed aluminum cover that doubles as a keyboard. About 70 bucks, but to me, well worth it, both for protection, and for typing. It's a little weird because it isn't set up exactly like a standard 101 keyboard, but I'm getting used to it, and am really happy I bought it.

Which brings up an important point (to me, anyway). Effectively, I've got a netbook. I pop the ipad out of the cover and stand it up in the groove at the top of the keyboard area, and for all intents and purposes, I have a netbook, which is what I'll probably buy if my laptop ever gives out, and which I recommended Mrs BOP buy, since she's still trying to decide.

Hope that helps.

it really all depends on what you want it for. If you want something to do work on, go for the laptop. if you want something to play with/ read on/ just browse the net, go for the tablet.

Ordered a laptop from HP. I'm sure that will make me happy.
Thanks everyone

I have an HP that I bought 2 years ago, and I've been pretty happy with it. I already had a wireless network set up at home, and the setup and integration to my network was seamless and one of the easiest I've ever done.

Happy computing.
