After a series of disappointing movies, including Bewitched (one of last year's worst), Kicking & Screaming, and The Producers, Will Ferrell returns to full-on comedic lunacy mode and delivers his funniest effort since Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy. Here, he plays a legendary racecar driver who must go head-to-head with a gay Formula One veteran from France. Their conflict is a fun lampooning of the Blue State/Red State divide and the movie is both a tribute to and send-up of the colorful NASCAR culture, which means it will appeal to both NASCAR hardcores and everyone else (I fall into the latter camp).
Ferrell creates a soon-to-be iconic character, a hilarious fellow who surrounds himself with kitschy excess and has one main goal in life: to go fast and win everything. The supporting cast is fileld with great talents at the top of their games, especially John C. Reilly as Cal Naughton Jr., the protagonist's dedicated sidekick. A character actor known for his dramatic turns in such films as The Aviator, Boogie Nights, and Magnolia, he gives fantastic support to Ferrell and steals many scenes.
Overall, I was quite impressed with Talladega Nights. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it as I am not fond of NASCAR, but I had a great time and laughed from beginning-to-end.
This is an entertaining, well-made summer comedy and I definitely recommend it.
